About Alan

I have spent the last 30 years working either for large corporations or as a small company entrepreneur.

Prior to starting a business career, my ambition was to be a professor at a university. After completing a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Physiology at UCSB, I attended graduate school in a joint program with Scripps Institute and San Diego State. I also started in a teaching credential program and taught Mathematics and Chemistry at a magnet high school in San Diego. The experience was rewarding.

I have six children, three of whom have graduated from college and two are attending college currently. I have been a math and science tutor for my children and their friends. I also review essays and reports in other subjects.

I have come full circle and returned to what I really enjoy - teaching and tutoring young minds.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Comprehension, grammar, writing

Algebra 1

Math terminology and variables made easy

Biology

Biology can be the most rewarding of sciences for the student. The discovery of the complexity and beauty of nature.

Elementary Math

Math made easy! Everyone is capable of succeeding in elementary math.

Elementary Science

As a former physiologist, I enjoy helping students understand the nature of the universe. Learning science can be challenging and fulfilling for the student.

Study Skills

Fundamental to study skills is organization. There is a need to define problem areas in the curriculum as well as an enhancement in subject areas that the student is already comfortable. It is important to set up a study schedule based on the quiz and testing schedule. I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Physiology from UCSB, and I attended graduate school in a joint program with Scripps Institute and San Diego State.
