Knowledge of subject matter is just one aspect of being a good tutor. It is also important to connect on a personal level with your students. I love working with elementary school, high school and college students, as well as those of you in business and graduate school, and am interested in what you think and how you think. Finding topics that inspire you as they pertain to the subject matter you are studying is part of the process that unfolds as we work together.
Since thinking is an integral part of writing, I place great emphasis on both, often with profound results. We will go through your assignments step by step, if needed, and begin constructing your first draft together; or, you can bring me what you have done and I can edit it, make suggestions and send you on your way. The choice is yours, depending on your needs.
I have taught U.S. and World History, English and American Literature as well as Creative and Expository Writing, always with an emphasis on effective verbal and written communication. I teach reading and writing courses to elementary school students as well. My students typically begin their semesters hating to write and finish having found their own voices and a newly discovered appreciation for their budding talent. I find nothing quite as exciting as guiding a student through his or her academic pursuits and am qualified to assist students at all grade levels - elementary, junior high/middle school through post-graduate.
If you are a business professional wishing to hone your writing and communication skills, you have come to the right place. Tired of dreading to send an email? Let's work together so that you can effectively and confidently communicate with your colleagues and associates.
In addition to my undergraduate degree in Philosophy from U.C.L.A., I began my college career as an English major. I also have an M.A. in Conscious Evolution, the inter-disciplinary study of how human beings and cultures change and evolve over time. This subject matter profoundly affected my perspective on life and the importance of the individual - a perspective I bring to my work with students in the capacity of tutor, mentor and muse. Sharon greatly helped me improve my analysis skills. We spent most of our lessons discussing the book we had chosen to read. Not only did I enjoy the many discussions we had over analyzing this book, but I also learned how to analyze better and read more carefully for any and all future books. She was able to help me develop these skills in such a fun and memorable way that most times, it felt more like a conversation than just a lesson. Sharon is extremely nice, helpful, and easy to talk to. She is also flexible, understanding, and patient, especially since my schedule was not always easy to work with. I recommend Sharon to anyone who wants to develop their writing and/or analysis skills in a fun, yet still very effective, way.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For approximately one year I taught reading comprehension and writing to two different groups of grammar school aged children at a local learning center in San Jose, California.
The classes were one hour in duration and we read articles tailored to their interests, did exercises and discussed what we read. They also wrote essays and answered questions. They received immediate feedback and seemed to thrive under my tutelage.
I also privately tutored two children - one in the first grade and another heading into middle school. Again, we worked on reading comprehension and writing.
English is a passion of mine. Being able to communicate effectively, comprehend what one reads and write clearly in one's own voice provides a degree of confidence that makes all the difference in one's experience at school and in life.
Whatever the grade level, there are effective tools available for increasing one's skill level. In addition to focusing in on the strengths and weaknesses of each student I tutor, I also utilize exercises that help students discover their own critical thinking capacities, knowing that in order to write well, we also need to know how to think.
One's ability to read is usually a determining factor in whether or not a student likes to read. In the very early stages of learning how to read, students sometimes get bored by the subject matter they are studying.
The wonderful thing about tutoring is that I am able to tailor the reading material to my students' interests. This almost always immediately changes the relationship a student has to reading; and then, we can work on issues of comprehension and vocabulary by practicing reading out loud and completing assignments that support comprehension and vocabulary building.
