About Jacqueline

I have a Masters Degree in TESL. I have been an ESL instructor for 7 years, having taught in Adult Education as well as Community college and four-year college levels. I also have a certification as a phonetician (a person who helps people improve their accents). I have taught TOEFL preparation classes. I have several certifications in reading; helping students to be able to read strategically and use critical thinking skills to aid in comprehension. In addition, I teach grammar as well as writing. I have worked as a staff writing tutor to help students write effectively and clearly.

I enjoy tutoring one-on-one as well as teaching in groups or in the classroom setting. Tutoring offers the opportunity to really focus on the students individual needs. Students who seek tutoring are usually very motivated and have a strong desire to learn or reinforce their classroom instruction.

What makes an excellent English tutor is someone who is intimately familiar with the subject matter and has the ability to convey the information to a student. In addition, a good tutor is able to understand how the student processes and absorbs information, and is able to address and apply those methods to help the student to be a successful learner. I also feel that a successful tutor can help the student develop a love for learning.

If you want professional help from a person who is in the classroom and knows what is required for a student whose native language is not English to be able to compete on a level playing field with those whose first language is English, and if you want to be able to understand and interact with your instructors, I am the person who can help you achieve your goals.

In addition, if your first language is English, I have the skills and knowledge to help you improve and enhance your grammar and writing skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
