About Faye A.

I have retired from teaching public high school English classes and would love to continue aiding young people and adults with their reading comprehension, analysis, vocabulary, language usage, writing, editing and speaking skills. For 24 years, I helped students graduate high school and prepare for college. Not only did I tutor individual students during lunch and after school--especially on their applications, resumes and research papers--but also I have tutored and edited outside school. Tailoring my methods and our approaches as well as study content stimulates clients' learning. Currently in the Public Library's Literacy Program, I use required and individually chosen sources suited to clients' skills and interests.

As a California Credentialed high school English teacher, I led five diverse classes daily. They included many non-native speakers as well as native, from disadvantaged and wealthy families, youth who had difficulty concentrating or believing in their potentials, and those who already had good work habits and great grades. I followed city and state standards in planning my own units and lessons as well as in preparing students for uniform exams. In addition, I worked with students on projects they themselves designed.

Though not now fluent in other languages, I certainly studied and practiced Spanish, French, bits of Latin and German, plus, for 5 years, Chinese. Thus, I met challenges and can empathize with students now similarly striving. Through high school, college, graduate school, and retraining for teaching high school English, I stretched myself, developed some talent and "had a life."

As a tutor, I am adept at working with students plus coordinating plans with their parents and teachers. Students, teachers, and counselors always have found me enunciating clearly, agreeable in manner, flexible, and attentive. I hope you will also.

Please write me through WyzAnt.com or phone me, discuss my fee, and tell me your needs as well as preferred meeting place. When we meet, I hope you will have your texts, assignments and/or other English-related projects. Meanwhile, I look forward to your response.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

One's handwriting still has daily uses for most people, and I have used a Los Angeles Public Library cursive handwriting text to help an adult learn cursive. I had to submit my application essay to the School of Education at California State University Northridge in handwriting because teachers need to have all their communications legible. Over my 24 years of teaching classes, I have worked with youth on their writing more clearly and legibly for their classwork, homework, and essays as well as on their using uppercase and lowercase letters. Of course, if my writing on handouts, transparencies, and the classroom board was not acceptable to students, I had to correct it. I respect the teaching of pencil/pen strokes in certain order and direction because that enabled me to learn not just our English writing but also Chinese character writing.
