Jesus did a great job for his first lesson with my son. He was knowledgeable and patient and took the time to really explain. My 10 yr old son was shy but they talked about health self esteem and self worth. He did a great job!! I look forward to our next lesson.
Jesus was able to quickly identify my son's areas of need in order to accomplish the overall goal. He seems very knowledgeable and comfortable teaching the subject math. We are very happy to have met him.
I am very much pleased and impressed with Jesus's approach to tutoring my son. From the very start he has been able to connect with my son, which meant my son shared with him what areas of schoolwork were troubling him most, from his perspective, which in turn enabled Jesus to target those areas more effectively.
Jesus is currently an elementary teacher in the LAUSD and brings to our tutoring sessions the experience of years spent as a teacher. His conversational manner of instruction is very effective with my son, who actually listens to him! And although he was primarily engaged to tutor in math, his willingness to help in any subjects needed, combined with the fact the that he is teaching the subject matter on a daily basis, makes him an excellent choice for my son.
I would recommend him to anyone in search of quality tutoring for their child.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 17 years of classroom experience in which I have taught grades 1-5 multiple times. I am well aware of the required standards for each grade and subject, and how they build upon one another. I am comfortable meeting the needs of all learners as I have 5 years of experience teaching gifted students and 3 years as a resource specialist.
I have a passion for math and years of successful instruction in the subject. I was rated a most effective teacher by the LA Times in the two years they provided teacher rankings. I was also recently selected as a Math Fellow with LAUSD (1 of 60). Math Fellows are a select group of teachers who will provide professional development to lead teachers throughout the district. Math Fellows will provide new instructional methods in math and explain how the new Math Common Core Standards can best be implemented.
I have taught Open Court, which is phonics based, in grades 1 and 2 for a total of 4 years. In addition, I spent three years as a resource specialist working with students who struggled to read primarily due to holes in their phonics knowledge. I am confident I can fill in the gaps your child needs to become a successful reader.
