I love teaching and helping students learn to improve their understanding, mastery...and maybe even love!... of a subject. I realize how sometimes a little more positive one- on- one guidance and patient encouragement can make the difference in improvement and in showing that on tests and reports. As a teacher, I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students do this.
I graduated from UCLA with a BA in English, and did graduate work and student teaching at The College of William & Mary in Virginia. I also have taken graduate courses in teaching for reading specialist at The University of Virginia. In Virginia I have taught middle school Language Arts for 11 years, and high school English during several summers. I have tutored all aspects of English after school almost every year of my time as a teacher.
I also have filmed credits as a screenwriter, and am able to help interested adult students with the screenwriting process.
As a teacher, writer, and screenwriter, I have the working knowledge of what it takes to improve reading comprehension and the mechanics of writing in both literature and nonfiction, and to recognize the strengths/ weaknesses of plot story elements to help move a story forward in novels.
I can also tutor math up to Algebra II...in fact enjoy it!....and social studies, history, and science through the public school years.
An important goal for my tutoring is to keep a student challenged, but not frustrated, and encourage the curiosity that fosters learning. A reasonable amount of homework after each lesson is important for reinforcement, and I provide feedback on progress.
I am generally available for tutoring every day from 9am to 7pm, and I can travel to you. My base rate is $60/hour.
I look forward to hearing from you, and helping you achieve success in your studies!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught writing, reading, research, literature, nonfiction, grammar, proofreading, and vocabulary in public school.
My subject qualifications include teaching grammar and syntax in my English classes for 11 years in public schools.
I have taught literature for 11 years in middle school, including for advanced English students.
I have worked successfully with students at many different levels with their reading abilities and comprehension. Vocabulary is a large key to increasing reading skills, and sometimes working with stories the student really is interested in helps in working through obstacles.
