Pennsylvania State University (Physics)
Colorado State University (Graduate Coursework)
Unlike my classmates who left for the defense industry, I dreamed to be a physics professor. I earned a scholarship to graduate school and hoped to be a better university teacher than those that I had. But the physicists seemed to invest more in papers and journals than in their students. I exited the ivory tower for Shanghai where I would teach and where I would learn more than I had ever before.
I gravitated toward our school's most professional teachers - now my closest mentors and friends. Folders of their graduate education coursework and their teaching resources still crowd my computer. Most invaluable amongst us was a compassionate science teacher who would become my wife. To her, I am grateful for the boundless support for my education career.
In Shanghai, I taught for The Princeton Review and then CIE A-Level physics to senior high school students. In 2011, I founded Newton American Education Studio to help prepare Shanghai’s students to enter and succeed at top US universities. In 2016, I permanently relocated to Washington, DC. I am more than a math and physics teacher - my students consider me a coach and a mentor. My ten years of experience guiding students to top scores and selective universities will help me mentor you likewise.
Successful lessons come from a good relationship with your tutor! Let me assess your specific needs with an initial diagnostic. From there, we can discuss the plan of attack the works best for you. Very knowledgeable, very helpful and good at explaining, very east to set up sessions with (accommodating) and was able to tutor last minute on the weekend because I had an exam. great tutor
Best physics tutor I've had, hands down. Very knowledgeable and able to explain every concept in detail. Also very nice and patient and easy to get a hold of.
Michael has been helping me with test prep before major college physics exams for the past semester. Each lesson he demonstrates his mastery of the subject and an admirable level of patience as I am not the quickest learner.
My son had an excellent first session with Michael on AP Calculus. He learned a lot and found Michael very helpful.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught advanced math to my Chinese students in Shanghai! You will score 700+ on SAT Subject Tests or 4+ on the AP and I will get you there.
I founded a study abroad college counseling agency in Shanghai that I ran for four years. I assisted over thirty students plan extracurricular activities and coursework, prepare for exams, build relationships with schools, and complete applications. My students came from a variety of backgrounds and skill sets with a wide range of interests and goals. My students received offer letters from Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, Cornell, Penn State, Illinois, and more. My mentor was a Harvard trained admissions counselor who helped me as Director of Operations at my startup.
As a physicist, teacher, and tutor, I have nearly 10 years of experience with differential equations. I have tutored advanced high school students and university students in methods of ordinary and partial differential equations.
I also have 10 years of experience with linear algebra. I have tutored linear algebra to advanced high school students as well as computer science and engineering students at the university level.
I led my Shanghai students to the highest A-Level Physics scores in Asia. No matter if it's AP, IB, SAT, MCAT, or GRE physics, your scores will go up. I've even had normal humans earn perfect scores!
We're not going to just memorize equations! For ten years, I've tutored and taught classes on math and physics in America and abroad. We will work through your pre-calc together. By the end, you'll have a solid math foundation for whatever it is you're trying to do.
For ten years, I've battled the SAT around the world and picked up a lot of "tricks". 150+ on Reading is typical, even for ESL! More is common, even without (completely) blasting you with mind-numbing vocabulary.
