About Megan

Have you fallen behind in your physics class? Are you overwhelmed by the amount of information your instructor has presented? Are you unsure which material is essential to understanding the topic at hand, and which is just filler? I can help!

I love to help others understand the fascinating world of astronomy and physics. Besides graduating with a B.Sc. in Physics from UCSB in 2013, I also have several years of experience in explaining scientific concepts to both students and the general public; the former from being a physics and astronomy lab instructor at a local university, and the latter from giving regular talks at a local astronomy museum.

Physics is a difficult subject. Even students who usually get high grades in other subjects often do not know how to study for their physics classes. I can show you study methods specifically tailored to physics classes, which will work even when other study methods have failed. In my time studying physics at UC Santa Barbara, I have learned what types of questions physics professors like to ask, as well as which concepts in physics are the most fundamental to having an understanding of the subject.

Subjects offered:
Astronomy (all levels)
High school physics
All AP Physics
All introductory college physics (calculus-based or algebra-based)

I can also tutor upper division college physics on a case-by-case basis (classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, etc). Contact me for more info.

Tips on getting the most out of your tutoring sessions:
1. Read your textbook beforehand. It's okay if you don't understand everything - at least familiarize yourself with the terms and formulas presented in the book. This way, you don't have to waste your valuable tutoring time on reading the textbook when these terms and formulas inevitably come up. While you're reading, jot down questions to ask about things you don't understand. If you have trouble concentrating while reading the text, try reading for 25 minutes at a time, followed by a 5 minute break, then repeat as many times as necessary.
2. Attempt all homework problems beforehand. Get as far as you can in each problem - write down the given information and any relevant formulas you can find. You don't want to waste your tutoring time on something you can do by yourself! If you still can't finish the problem, write down exactly what confuses you so we can jump right in to discussing it.
3. During the tutoring session, keep track of what you've learned - if you hear an explanation that clarifies a concept, take a few seconds to write it down in your own words. Physics classes contain more information than you can possibly memorize, so it's easy to forget concepts. Writing them down in a way you know you can understand will help review for your tests in the future.

General studying tips:
Before you begin attempting physics problems, you must be familiar with the relevant vocabulary. When your class covers a new chapter, you should immediately memorize the following things about every quantity mentioned in class or in the reading:
1. Qualitative definition
2. Units
3. Scalar/Vector

For example, regarding the quantity "velocity", you should know 1. it describes the change in position of an object, 2. the SI units are meters/second, and 3. it is a vector.

AP Physics tips:
For now, I just have one recommendation specific to AP Physics: PRINT OUT THE FORMULA SHEET AND USE IT ALL THE TIME! Use it to help with your homework, use it to study, become best friends with it. It is the most valuable tool you'll have on the AP test, and the more familiar you are with it, the better. If you never look at it before the test, you will waste lots of time trying to find the formulas you need on testing day. Physics formulas are completely meaningless without context, and by using the formula sheet often, you will not only learn where they are on the sheet, but you will learn how to use them properly.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

I have been a museum guide at a local astronomy museum for several years, as well as having been an astronomy lab instructor at CSUN for several semesters. I have also taken several advanced astrophysics classes at UCSB and CSUN.

Excellent tutor

In one lesson, my son had a better grasp of AP physics. Megan's approach makes the difficult content and concepts more comprehensible.
