About Barrett

I am a working guitar player in the Los Angeles area. Having played guitar for 18 years, I graduated with a B.A. in Guitar Performance from Musicians Institute. Being that it was a very rigorous program, I learned what it takes to not just be a smart musician, but a great musician. I finished three years of music theory, and ear training, and learned how to perform different contemporary styles including Jazz, R&B, Rock, Country, Blues, and many others. After graduating with an award of most outstanding student, I put everything I learned to work and started playing in groups and backing up singers. I toured with Andy Allo (Prince's New Power Generation band). I also got the opportunity to play guitar in a worldwide commercial. I use my theory background and combine it with my passion for songwriting to craft songs that I perform with my original groups or help others with their songs.

I have been teaching guitar lessons for about three years. While I am a fairly new teacher, I take pride in the results that I have seen in my students, which range from beginner to intermediate, and from child to adult. My teaching style, while being challenging, is really fun and relaxed. Music is fun and I believe that learning music should be just as fun as playing it. When it comes to learning the basics of music, I usually start with what the student already know's and begin to fill in the gaps and create a lesson plan that will get them to where their goals are. Music is often times taught in a confusing and convoluted way. I really try and present it in a simple fashion that connects the knowledge of the students instrument to the basic concepts of music. This will eventually show in their performance musicality.

When it comes to teaching the guitar, my two main emphasis are placed on learning the fretboard on a macro level, and understanding how to feel and play the guitar rhythmically correct and in time. It is my opinion that playing rhythmically correct is a more important skill to master first, before improve playing. But, both can be studied together. With these two main concepts I love to teach my students songs and music that they love and are inspired by.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

During my Time at Musicians Institute I took 6 ear training classes, of which I passed all with A's. With my ear training tutoring, I will be able to help you identify the notes, intervals, chords, and chord progressions you need to hear. I can give you simple exercises and and practice techniques to expand your listening, and recognition of these concepts.

Guitar

I have B.A. in Guitar Performance from Musicians Institute. I have played guitar for over 17 years, gaining performance experience in groups and backing up singers. I am able to teach many different styles including Jazz, R&B, Funk, Rock, Folk, Country, and many others. I have had experience in recording sessions, recording guitar and creating interesting parts that fit the style. I have a very personable teaching style that is challenging and fun. I teach from experience, and pass along useful information that I have received from teachers that I have had.
