About Bruce

Have you ever wanted to play a musical instrument? Not only is it fun, research has shown learning a musical instrument stimulates your brain in a way that helps you learn other subjects more thoroughly as well. I have been a professional musician all my life and love sharing my knowledge with students. I have performed on drums, bass, guitar, vocals, percussion, and keyboards throughout the years, in many different bands and musical organizations. I read, write, compose, arrange, produce and engineer. I am familiar and have performed all styles of music from rock, funk, jazz, classical, reggae, folk, blues, Latin, Americana, etc.

Students of all ages are accepted. I have children myself and am very patient with young learners, but am more than happy to teach middle-schoolers, high-schoolers, university students, or adults. I take my profession seriously and have a compassion for music and teaching, yet I try to keep it fun, as music is, and should be, lots of fun. I do insist that students learn the basics (such as how to hold drumsticks properly, finger a guitar correctly, etc.), so that they have a solid basis to build their skills on, without acquiring any bad habits that would have to be unlearned later. There are many untrained music instructors out there that are not doing anyone any favors. It is important to learn correctly from the beginning. Thank you and I hope to expose you to this wonderful world of music.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have composed music for commercials, T.V., and film. I have also composed music for classical string quartets. I have arranged and composed music for big band jazz ensembles. I have also arranged and composed music for jazz fusion bands.

Drums

I've played drums professionally since age 12. I was the best percussionist and drummer in the state of Nebraska during high school. I graduated from the Musician's Institute in both drums/percussion and bass. I currently teach classes in drums and percussion for the Burbank Parks and Recreation department, and drums for Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter.

Ear Training

I have an excellent ear. In the "Musician's Institute" and all other music classes I have taken in college, I was always the first to complete the transcription of the ear training exercises. I also always did it correctly. I have also figured out many songs, by ear, that I have played in multitudes of bands. I have also been able to tell when things are in or out of tune, on the many recording sessions I have worked on.

General Music

I have been a musician all my life. I have studied music extensively. I read, write, compose, arrange, produce, and engineer. I also sing, play guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and percussion. I have led many bands, and taught many students.

Guitar

I have played guitar professionally since age 12. I know music theory, how to read, write, and all the chords on guitar. I have successfully taught many students privately. I also play many other instruments, so I can teach students how to play in an ensemble situation.

Music Production

I have produced, engineered, and performed on many records. I write, arrange, and play many instruments. I know how to get a good vocal or instrumental performance out of other people. I know recording gear inside out. I worked in the studio at Capitol Records for 17 years, and independently at other studios for much longer. Some of the records I have worked on have won Grammies.

Piano

Piano was my first instrument, starting at the age of 6. I've played piano and keyboards for many professional gigs. I'm great with kids and have privately taught many children piano successfully. I'm well versed in theory and musicianship, and play several instruments.

Sight Singing

Put a piece of music in front of me, and I will be able to sing it correctly, the first time. I have taken sight singing in college and was at the top of my class, with a 4.0 grade. Other members of bands I've been in have always relied on me to sing them their parts, when they weren't sure what they were.

Songwriting

I have written thousands of songs. I write lyrics, as well as music. Some of my songs have been on records. Some of my songs have been played on the radio.
