I am an American Sign Language teacher and have been teaching ASL at College of the Canyons, Glendale Community College, Pasadena City College, and John Burroughs High School. I use the 1988 "Signing Naturally" and 2008 "Signing Naturally" textbooks and have taught ASL 101, ASL 102, Fingerspelling, and Creative Sign Language. I trained with Deaf West Theatre and National Theatre of the Deaf, and have learned creative ways to use ASL.
I also work on the ASL master team for "Switched at Birth" and develop tailor-made private classes to teach to writers, actors, and crew working in television and film. Previously, I worked as a sign language consultant for professional theatre interpreters working at Portland Center Stage and Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company in Portland, Oregon.
I have more than 5 years of academic teaching experience and have worked with students as young as 7 years old and up to people in their 60s, and can easily tailor tutoring sessions to best fit the client--making it more fun & creative or more academic-oriented, depending on the learning goals/preferences of the client. Kalen has been wonderful to work with. She contacted us immediately and answered all my questions regarding her experiences and background in teaching ASL. She is well qualified! Kalen shows up on time and is ready to go. She finds out what I am working on in school and makes sure we cover this material. She fine tunes the areas I need to work on and lets me know my weak points but also is very encouraging. My teacher said she noticed improvement in my signing since working with Kalen after 3 sessions! The best thing is I am feeling more confident. I receive detailed summaries after each class on what we worked on and the things I need to work on. She is very helpful, friendly and great at teaching ASL. I would highly recommend her.
I've been a classroom teacher for 12 years, and a private tutor for 20; I know a great deal about the specific skill set required for each job. Kalen is the right person for both. She is exceptionally skilled at determining a student's level without clunky quizzes or tests, and she has already formulated a plan of action that will highlight the areas I'm interested in studying while providing necessary context and linguistic history facts to enrich the experience. And she manages to do it all in a warm, friendly and supportive manner.
Kalen is an excellent tutor. She is sweet, enthusiastic, committed and responsive to what her student will find most helpful. We are very pleased and consider ourselves very lucky to have her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a native signer and fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). I also have proficiency in Signed Exact English (SEE) and Pidgin Signed English (PSE).

I can use ASL fluently to tutor in any subject: Math, Science, Health, Art, English, Reading, Writing, etc.
