Are you looking for a music teacher or a writing tutor? If so, I’d be the perfect fit for you!
I am a professional singer and songwriter with 14 years of experience in songwriting, singing, performing and playing guitar. When I am not touring, I teach music to students of all ages - although I have a great knack for teaching children ages 3 to 14. I currently teach music at a Montessori school in Walnut, CA as well as privately.
I have 5 years of professional vocal training in NYC under the tutelage of Don Lawrence (Christina Aguilera, Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga), and 13 years of training in piano and violin. I’ve toured across the U.S. and the Philippines performing my original songs, and played in such venues as The Shrine in L.A. and Lincoln Center in NYC. An avid music lover, I also have extensive experience in music theory, orchestra, private lessons and chamber ensembles!
In 2007, I graduated magna cum laude from New York University, with a B.A. in Individualized Study, concentration in International Relations and Immigration Studies! My time there took me to Geneva, Switzerland and the University of Michigan, where I had hands-on studies and honed my skills in writing. I also achieved ACTFL Advanced proficiency in French.
My love for writing continued after college. For 3 years, I was a reporter at The Record and Herald News, two daily newspapers in New Jersey. In my time there, I received 2nd place for the Robert H. Kelly Award for first-year reporters, spearheaded a shopping blog, and hosted a video series titled, “Soundcheck with Alfa Garcia.”
I was born in the Philippines and moved to the U.S. when I was just 5 years old. As a result, I know the challenges non-native speakers can have in writing, speaking and reading English. With my personal experience and encouragement, I can be a big help to those who face this challenge!
If you work with me, you’ll find that my love for writing and music are contagious. I believe students can learn better when they have help from a teacher who is passionate about the subjects.
Other interests I have include running, getting hooked on TV shows, and cooking. I also spend a lot of time writing in a personal journal and have taught myself how to play the ukulele.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read about me! Now it’s time for me to learn about you! Feel free to contact me for more information on how I can help you achieve your goals.

I have been taking violin lessons with Alfa for several months now and she has far surpassed my expectations. She is patient, friendly, always punctual, and well accomplished with the violin, piano, and vocals. If you are seeking an instructor, you will not be disappointed with Alfa! I highly recommend her.
Alfa is great with children. All three kids love her. She is very patient and encouraging. She makes learning the piano and violin easy for my 3 kids. I highly recommend her.
My boys look forward to their piano lessons and have improved tremendously under her guidance. Alfa works on the core concepts without making it boring.
I greatly appreciate her working with my goals and objectives for my son. She really knew where to focus on my son's weakness.
Alfa has been able to teach my daughter how to play the violin, from scratch, within a very short time period. Alfa has also been able to balance the sessions with piano classes. She is extremely patient and very amicable. A truly great tutor!!
Alfa has been my tutor for a few months now and is an excellent influence on both me and my brother. We've definitely improved in all of the subjects she has taught us: English, Math, Guitar, and Piano. Alfa is very patient and understanding during lessons. Alfa is a very capable instructor who knows what she is teaching in music. I am very happy to be able to work with such an amazing teacher!
Alfa is a superb teacher. She instantly puts you at ease and explains things in such a manner that you can immediately address your skills and move forward in improving them.
I had never had a voice lesson before and was nervous and apprehensive about singing in front of a stranger. Alfa made sure I understood what I was going to be asked to do, made me feel comfortable in doing it, and best of all, using her own voice, helped me see and hear what I should be doing.
Oh, and she has a great voice, too!
Alfa's natural, bright, and energetic personality creates an ideal learning environment that's comfortable for any student. Whether you're a seasoned professional, or just starting off, Alfa's expertise and natural ability to explain with ease the complexity of singing makes her an ideal tutor. My overall experience thus far with Alfa as my vocal coach has been nothing but a positive and exciting experience. I would highly recommend Alfa to anyone whose looking for an excellent vocal coach.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Music is my life-long passion and I love sharing my expertise in this wonderful subject. My training began in 1991 when I took my first piano lesson. I studied for 8 years, playing many recitals in NYC including Steinway Hall and Cami Hall.
In 1994, I learned violin and joined the Children's Orchestra Society (COS) in Long Island, NY. I played with this orchestra until 2003! Much of my training was in music theory, chamber ensemble, and orchestral music. I even got to play in venues like the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in Colorado and the Lincoln Center in New York. Violin was my primary passion for a while. In addition to COS and my school orchestra (where I was concertmaster), I was accepted into the North Jersey Regional Orchestra in 2002.
I have many years of experience teaching violin and piano to beginner students. I have taught students ages 5 to 16, but can teach adults as well. It's never too late to learn a new instrument!
These days, I am a professional singer/songwriter. I have 4 years of formal training with a vocal coach who has taught such greats as Whitney Houston, Mick Jagger and Christina Aguilera. My songwriting has also led me to learn the ukulele - my latest instrument!
As you can see, my knowledge of music comes from a rich background in classical and pop training. I know the advantages of formal studies, but also believe music can be self-taught with the right motivation! With all this musical expertise under my belt, I know I can help you reach your musical potential!
I am a 12-year guitar player, with expertise in acoustic guitar, rhythm guitar and songwriting. I taught myself this versatile 6-string instrument many years ago, after 12 years of classical training on piano and violin.
These days, I am a professional singer/songwriter. How did it begin? In 1998, armed with my first guitar, I wrote my first song. I still do that today! I write, sing, and play my own songs, and have been recognized by the New York Songwriters Circle! I have had the joy of touring across the U.S., too! I've played at venues such as The Shrine in L.A. and Highline Ballroom in NYC. Since 2002, I have released 3 short EP's, and a full-length album in 2009.
I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting to learn the guitar - whether you want to play along with songs, write your own music, or expand your musical horizons. I will keep your goals in mind as I work with you, and make learning the guitar a fun, effective, and rewarding experience!
Music is my life-long passion and I love sharing my expertise in this wonderful subject. My training began in 1991 when I took my first piano lesson. I studied for 8 years under Dr. Raul Sunico (Dean of the University of Santo Tomas Music Conservatory, Manila, Philippines), and played many piano in various venues, including Steinway Hall, Cami Hall, and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, where I performed one of my piano compositions along with the Children's Orchestra Society of New York (2003).
I continued piano after formal training, learning pop piano techniques in 1998 through the present day. I have taught many beginner students from the ages of 5 to 15, and add knowledge of music theory along with basic piano technique.
I am familiar with John Thompson beginner methods, Suzuki beginner method, and Hanon exercises.
So, you want to be the next Diane Warren, Bruno Mars or Harold Arlen?
Look no further - with my 12 years of songwriting experience, I can give you the help and encouragement you need! Songwriting is a wonderful skill that is as fulfilling as it is challenging. Unlike other aspects of music, there is no surefire way to write a song.
In my 12 years as a songwriter, I have written hundreds of songs in the genres of pop, rock, folk and country. I have been a writer under BMI since 2006. My music has been self-released on four albums - 3 EP's and 1 full-length LP. I've even received honorable mention from the New York Songwriters Circle for a song I wrote.
As a singer/songwriter, I've toured the U.S. playing colleges and venues like The Shrine and Ford Amphitheatre L.A., and the Lincoln Center in NYC.
If you have the passion and curiosity to combine words and music, I am well-equipped to guide you through the songwriting process! It will be a rewarding task, I guarantee it.
Do you love the warm, emotive sound of the violin? With my help, you could be creating that sound yourself!
My studies with violin began in 1994, as a 4th grade student. Beyond school orchestra, I joined the Children's Orchestra Society (COS) in Long Island, NY, and continued until 2003. Playing with COS allowed me to play violin in such venues as the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, Rockefeller University and Queens College.
In addition to my duties as First Chair of Violin II in COS, I was also concertmaster at my high school orchestra. My studies gave me many years of experience in chamber music and solo performance. Outside of orchestra and school, I also played violin for my church!
I studied privately for 10 years, under Sheila Reinhold, who was mentored by violin-great Jascha Heifetz.
During my college years, I took on a handful of beginner violin students. I love teaching the violin! It may be a challenging instrument, but that's what makes it so rewarding to learn.
With my expertise, I can help you learn the techniques and musical possibilities of that wonderful four-stringed instrument, the violin!
As a professional singer/songwriter for the last 12 years, I know the importance of maintaining good vocal technique and exercise. I have a total of five years of formal vocal training, and have a strong background in pop singing. I spent four years under an NYC vocal coach who nurtured such greats as Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston, Mick Jagger and Christina Aguilera.
Not only will I be able to help you with your technique and range, I can also offer tips on maintaining vocal health - the key ingredient to any successful singer!
I know how important it is to bring out your own unique voice. You may have noticed that many songs on the radio sound exactly the same! But each person has a unique sound and it's better to embrace that, than to fight it! Many times in my life, for example, people have wondered about my "raspy voice." But instead of being discouraged by my "different" sound, I use it to make my music stand out!
Writing is one of my strongest subjects! Following graduation from NYU in 2007, I worked in the Features department of two regional daily newspapers, The Record and Herald News (Bergen and Passaic Counties, New Jersey). I started off as an editorial assistant before my promotion to Reporter. In this position, I received the 2nd place award for First-Year Reporting from the New Jersey Press Association, and covered a range of beats: music, lifestyle, health and shopping. I also spearheaded a video-reporting series on local music titled, "Soundcheck with Alfa Garcia."
In addition, I have experience writing for YM Magazine and NYU's student-run newspaper, Washington Square News.
