About Evan

I am an experienced (1700+ hours) tutor certified in over 30 subjects. I'm a college graduate of Tufts University, Medford, MA and have passed my CBEST having worked with children for the past 15 years. I have taught in all environments in ratios of 1:1 to 8:1. Some examples have included home-schooling, tutoring part-time at Huntington Learning Center and for teaching SAT Math and Geometry in classroom environments (Top Learning Center and Perfect Score Academy). I have taken SAT practice tests where I score a perfect 800 in math and 760 in verbal. My experience all spans all sections of the ACT.

In addition to tutoring all sections of many standardized tests (ACT/SAT/GRE/ISEE/HSPT), I can assist with most school subjects including math (algebra/geometry), reading, writing, and biology. In addition to traditional subjects, I can also teach your child to read, refine their study skills or even improve their athletic ability.

I have a car, a clean driving record and passed a recent background check.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have experience with multiple ACT study manuals. When it comes to English, I break down the grammar rules and offer the 4 C approach to mastering the section: clear, complete, consistent, concise. I also help deconstruct sentences and simplify them by removing prepositional phrases.

ACT Math

I have experience in all aspects of Algebra. That comes from tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT Math, ACT Math and GRE Math. I have taught algebra in a classroom, a learning center and one-on-one. Areas of expertise include functions, FOIL, factoring, direct/inverse variation, logarithms, absolute value and inequalities. It's all about finding X or whatever the question asks for!

ACT Reading

I have been tutoring the ACT for several years both privately and at such companies as College Made Easy and Tier One Tutoring. My methods with this test involve both the content and time management. In what order should you do your reading section? What are some strategies? I help simplify the questions of the test and where to look.

Algebra 1

I have experience in all aspects of Algebra. That comes from tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT Math, ACT Math and GRE Math. I have taught algebra in a classroom, a learning center and one-on-one. Areas of expertise include functions, FOIL, factoring, direct/inverse variation, absolute value and inequalities. It's all about finding X or whatever the question asks for!

Algebra 2

I have experience in all aspects of Algebra. That comes from tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT Math, ACT Math and GRE Math. I have taught algebra in a classroom, a learning center and one-on-one. Areas of expertise include functions, FOIL, factoring, direct/inverse variation, logarithms, absolute value and inequalities. It's all about finding X or whatever the question asks for!

Career Development

I have been a human resources consultant for seven years having reviewed resumes and cover letters from tens of thousands of applicants. I know what grabs an employer's attention and what doesn't. I have also been sculpting cover letters and resumes myself for the past ten years and can customize them based on the job to which you're applying.

CBEST

I have passed and tutored the cbest test. I go over the Reading section and how it assesses your ability to comprehend information presented in written passages, tables, and graphs. I teach the two major skill areas: critical analysis and evaluation, and comprehension and research skills. I am very strong on the Mathematics section and help students understand the problems and how most of the questions are presented as word problems. I am strong on writing as well and illustrate how one topic asks you to analyze a given situation or statement and the other asks you to write about a specified personal experience.=

College Counseling

I have experience writing college essays, completing college applications and advising students on what tests are recommended for what schools. I have experience in California submitting to state schools, the UC system and the common app. I have also been an alumni interviewer for my college for the past ten years and know what schools are looking for and am great at coaching interviews.

COOP/HSPT

As a test prep professional, I have tutored all sections of the HSPT for the past five years. I go over pacing and content. For reasoning and vocab sections, I go over word-learning strategies so you don't have to memorize piles of flashcards, but I do offer flashcard strategies as well.

Film

I have worked in film for the past ten years, mostly as an actor. I have starred in student films and webisodes, been a stand-in and background and photo double in major motion pictures and tv and have worked as a PA and edited film as well. I have also performed in live theater and comedy over the past 10 years. I'm a professional that can help you with the performance or promotion side.

Geometry

My geometry skills are extensive from teaching boot camp over the summer and supervising in a learning center. I'm also a 2nd generation geometry tutor so I've learned from the best. Areas of expertise include:
Area and perimeter of a polygon /
Area and circumference of a circle /
Volume of a box, cube, and cylinder /
Pythagorean Theorem and special properties of
isosceles, equilateral, and right triangles /
Properties of parallel and perpendicular lines /
Coordinate geometry /
Geometric visualization /
Slope /
Similarity /
Transformations

GRE

I have experience in all aspects of Algebra. That comes from tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT Math, ACT Math and GRE Math. I have taught algebra in a classroom, a learning center and one-on-one. Areas of expertise include functions, FOIL, factoring, direct/inverse variation, logarithms, absolute value and inequalities. It's all about finding X or whatever the question asks for! For GRE, I have tutoring the reading sections as well.

Guitar

I have played guitar for the past 10 years.

ISEE

I have already tutored all sections of this in the past via Wyzant and did a great job. I am perfect at quantitative reasoning and help uncover confusions in verbal, reading comprehension and have even offered guidance on the essay. This applies to Lower, Middle and Upper versions.

Macintosh

I have and have used a MAC everyday for the past 5 years. I can operate a MAC, iPod and iPad. I am familiar with how to update hardware, software and get the best programs. I can also show someone how to get comfortable with any MAC/Apple product.

Marketing

I have been involved in Marketing since 1997 when working in non-profit for the Boomer Esiason Foundation. I have also helped in marketing with the National Hockey League and the FleetCenter (now TD Bank North Garden) in Boston. I have a certificate degree from NYU in Sports, Entertainment and Events Marketing.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook for the past 10 years. I know how to make folders, sort mail and prioritize messages. I can navigate an address book and add/delete contacts. The program is core to what I use email for.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows for the last 15 years. I can show people how to run their computer faster, add/delete programs and navigate overall. This also translates into how to use Microsoft Office. I am comfortable with Windows 95 through 2010.

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring algebra for over ten years. I have covered natural number arithmetic, types of numbers as well as integers, fractions, decimals and negative numbers. I have gone into factorization, distribution, roots, powers/exponents and the beginning of algebra equations. My style involves not giving you too much math at one time so you don't get lost in it.

Public Speaking

I have ten years experience of public speaking from speaking in classrooms to auditoriums. I have addressed crowds on leadership, networking and business planning. I have also coached my students so they can get a better handle on how they communicate. My degrees are from Tufts University and NYU and I am confident in showing a person how to be natural yet commanding in front of an audience.

SAT Math

Of all the subjects I tutor, SAT math is my specialty. I have helped almost 100 students over the years raise their score, sometimes by 100s of points. Having gotten perfect scores of 800 on practice tests myself I can transfer that know-how to your child and uncover what words or concepts they don't understand which would block them from full certainty. I greatly enjoy seeing my students discover the solution for themselves rather than spoon-feeding them. I look forward to helping your student.

Social Studies

I have studied social studies for several years with concentration in geography, government and history. My experience from 4th grade through high school and have studied US and European governments and philosophers. I also can uncover the exact things that students don't understand and bring them up to full understanding. I'm a college graduate of Tufts University, Medford, MA and have passed my CBEST and worked with children for the past 15 years.

Songwriting

I am a touring comedian/singer/songwriter for the past 10 years. I have written almost 100 songs whether original, parody or spoken word. I also have info on the 7 components needed to write a hit song.

Special Needs

I have worked with special needs children since I started tutoring. I completed the Exceptional Child course relating special needs while at Tufts University. I also worked 4 years with a non-profit for children with genetic disorders. From graduation the Student Hat Course I am able to cut through the label and accompanying anxiety and disability to cut to the bottom of what is not understood. The tools I use even raise IQ.

Study Skills

I am a graduate of the Student Hat course. This intensive course is a study of study. It showed how to study and what the 3 barriers are to learning. After taking this course, my IQ jumped dramatically, as did my verbal skills and reading comprehension. I have applied this to students whose skills I have improved over the past several years.

Theater

I have performed live on stage for the past 15 years. This includes scene study and musical theater. I have traveled throughout the country and been invited to conferences for my performances.

Video Production

I have been editing videos for the past 10 years. My main expertise is iMovie where I can edit demo reels for artists. Editing video is one of my favorite activities because I am very precise and everyone needs a promo video for something.

Vocabulary

I approach vocabulary from multiple ways. The popular way to do it is to drill with flashcards. But I also have a less robotic approach where if you apply the technique, you would never have to study the word again. I am also an expert on word origin which rounds out the concept of the word.

Writing

I have experience in writing for all genres and topics. I have written music reviews, sports editorials and general blog pieces. However, academically, I have helped with ACT, SAT and ISEE essay questions. I break down how to introduce, prove and conclude arguments for whatever the purpose.
