About Marites

Being a Comparative Literature major, my passion revolves around the subject matter of literature in its comprehensive sense - works of the great masters as well as some contemporary authors. I also hold a Master of Arts Degree in Education (Linguistics/TESL). As such, I have mastery of English grammar, composition, and syntax. With a second major in Journalism, I have taught Technical Writing, Business Writing, and the like. Broadcast Communication being my Cognate, I have also taught Speech to both high school and college students.

As an English Professor for 14 years at the University of San Agustin, the largest school in the Visayan Region of the Philippines, and at the University of the Philippines, St. Paul's College of Nursing, and Iloilo Doctors' College, I was exposed to various groups of students from different backgrounds, thus, enriching my perspectives as regards learning. As The Most Outstanding Graduate of my batch in the University of the Philippines, the premium university of the country, I was the sole recipient of the Rotary International Award for Journalism and of the Eagles Award for Journalism as well.

I specialize in Literature subjects as well as in Grammar, Composition, and Essay Writing. I generally use the Socratic method of teaching - which stimulates critical thinking in the student - thus, providing him with the opportunity to contribute to his own learning. I provide a free consultation with the prospective student and I require a 24-hour advance cancellation notice via e-mail or text messaging.

My tutoring schedule is from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 a. m. and 9:00 p. m. My base rate is $60.00/hour for an in-person lesson. Online tutoring will be accordingly announced in the near future.

I look forward to interacting with you in a fun environment while together, we explore the vast treasures of literature and the richness of the English language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I tutor high school and college students on literature and writing skills acquisition, which includes English.

ESL/ESOL

I have a master's degree in Teaching English As A Second Language and have taught English to second-language learners, in both high school and college levels, in the Philippines for fifteen years.

Grammar

I have a master's degree in English as a Second Language and a Second baccalaureate degree in Journalism. I have fifteen years of teaching English Grammar in the secondary and tertiary levels.

Literature

I tutor Literature from various countries to high school, college, and adult students. I can also tutor on the novel, the drama, and literary criticism. English Literature is one of my specialty subjects.

Public Speaking

My Cognate in college was Broadcast Communication. I had training in public speaking and I was often assigned by my university to various school symposia to be a guest/resource speaker.

As an English Professor, I was usually chosen to be the resource person in regional teacher seminars in English. I have experienced speaking before large audiences of professionals.

I was also always assigned to be the Master of Ceremonies in the city-wide Private Schools Academic Talent Contests between select students. There were usually about 500 attendees to these opening ceremonies.

Actually, I was exposed to and trained in public speaking since elementary school. As class valedictorian, I was always assigned to be the opening Host, Master of Ceremonies, Speaker for the Student Body, and the like. I also addressed the largest school in my district as I delivered my valedictory address.

In my parishes in the Philippines, I was always requested to speak in front of large audiences of parishioners in Charismatic Movement seminars and in church services as one of the leaders of the Teaching Ministry.

As an English Professor, I also taught Speech to college students. I used Speech Laboratory methods and the "listen-and-repeat" strategy similar to the Pimsleur Method. I addressed big classes every semester for fifteen years because i taught in the largest university in my region.

Writing

I tutor English Language, Composition, ESL, Reading, and Literature to high school, college, and adult students or professionals. I am currently a volunteer tutor for America Learns under the Adult Literacy Program of the Los Angeles Public Library where I teach/tutor adults.
