Grinnell College (Physics Philosophy)
McMaster University (Graduate Coursework)
I have five years of experience tutoring children of all academic levels from Pre-K through Graduate School and formerly served as the director of a tutoring center, a position that I left in 2014 to return to the teaching that I love. I hold BA degrees in both Physics and Philosophy from Grinnell College, completed my graduate coursework in the Philosophy of Religion at McMaster University, have authored solutions manuals for Differential Equations textbooks, edited published academic work and literary journals, and been nominated for a teaching award by my students for a university course on the relationship between science and religion. I have also had multiple poems published in anthologies and one of my academic papers on Heidegger and Derrida was accepted for presentation at a top European Philosophy symposium in 2006.
I am comfortable helping with all academic areas at the high school level except for foreign languages, all standardized tests except for AP US/World History, all levels of college Math, Physics, and Writing, and introductory college Chemistry. Graduate-level work would have to be limited to Continental Philosophy and specific topics in Math and branches of Physics, unfortunately. Some foreign language instruction in up to intermediate German or introductory French may be possible in certain situations.
Additionally, I have developed curricula and individualized programs for PSAT, SAT, ACT, SAT-II, GRE, ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT students, and am familiar with the application process to both local private high schools and top colleges nationwide. My students show an average score increase of 3.4 points on the ACT and 310 points on the (older) SAT, and I have achieved perfect scores on all sections of the ACT, all sections of the (older) SAT, an 800 on the Math lv. B SAT-II, a 750 on the Chemistry SAT-II, and an 800 on the Physics SAT-II. Two of my four PSAT students have been awarded National Merit Semifinalist awards, both on the new format of the test. I have also served as a college adviser for dozens of students and can assist with applications and essays as well as offer general advice with the college application process. My previous students have gone on to succeed at programs ranging from the CSU system to Gonzaga, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Rice, Claremont McKenna, and Brown.
I default to an informal style of teaching in all areas and prefer to work with talented, hard-working, ambitious students, although I have extensive experience serving as an academic adviser and IEP advocate in the California public school system as well. All of my students receive academic advising at no additional cost when they are enrolled in any content-based program with me, and this includes meetings with teachers, administrators, or counselors as necessary. For students enrolled in academic or test prep programs with me, college advising and application help is included at no cost as well. Finally, all students are welcome to solicit my help with any assignment at any time via email/text and I do not charge for this service, either.
I believe quite strongly that education works best when relationships are built upon trust. As such, I encourage any prospective students and their families to contact me before beginning instruction in order to ensure that everyone is on the same page with respect to goals, expectations, and preferences.
Finally, I'm not nearly as formal in person as the above makes me seem, honest! I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve academic success in whatever area you desire! Hello!

Jeremy has been amazing!!! He is the first tutor able to get my son to interact and really like it. I will pass by the room where they are working and it sounds as if it's two people having a pleasant and energetic conversation. In the past, my son has tried to find ways to get out of a simple 1 hour session. Now, not only does he get his materials prepared in advance, he actually mentioned that it doesn't seem like 2 hours at all. Best of all, he is no longer struggling and seems to be more confident in all of his subjects. Jeremy is consistently on time and prepared to help in all areas of a very challenging junior year in high school.
Jeremy is a busy guy as you can see by the number of 5 star ratings he has. Was looking for some finals help for my 7th grader and after one meeting we are going to keep him going through the summer! Great energy and personality!
My son has been working with Jeremy since September for college level classes, and he has been incredible. He is very patient and supportive, and explains the material so that it is easily understood. We are so lucky to have found him!
Jeremy is an awesome guy! Takes his time and gets to know how you like to study and what you want to accomplish in the class you're taking. I've never experienced this with any other tutor! Really easy to converse with and has the answer to any question you ask. I recommend him for anybody!! Lucky I found him on here.
Jeremy is genuine and sincere. We are very picky with our tutors and he is by far the best tutor that we have come to know and work with. He has had a great impact on my daughter and I highly recommend him!
Jeremy has a gift to think and see outside the box, and this gift has re-ignited my son's enthusiasm about learning and about receiving tutoring. Although we are just doing a few weeks, I can already tell we are going to see some amazing progress and lasting results. Thanks for everything!!
Update: we are making great and fast progress with Jeremy. My son has advanced more in two weeks than we had hoped. Should be up and running and ready for school. Thanks Jeremy. I would recommend this tutor highly!!!
Update 2: Completed our last session with Jeremy yesterday and we are so excited to be ready for 7th grade. What amazes us the most is our son's increase in not only skills, but his self confidence!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Jeremy and WyzAnt. I would highly recommend to all both this site and this tutor!
Thank you so much for helping me with my Philosophy class. I just got my grade back, and I got an A. Philosophy was a very hard subject for me but after you started tutoring me, I had such a better understanding of it and the class became much more enjoyable. I can't thank you enough.
Jeremy is extremely patient and highly organized. It was obvious from the first meeting that Jeremy is highly experienced in teaching the ACT. He also helped our daughter decide between the ACT and SAT. In addition to teaching our daughter test taking tips, it is obvious that he takes pride in making sure that she understands the material. Jeremy is equally strong in all sections of the test. He is always on time and well prepared with a lesson. He is easy to relate to and motivational. We were extremely lucky to find Jeremy as our ACT tutor.
Jeremy has continued to allow me to accomplish all the knowledge I need in my class. He continues to educate and question all the material to make sure I understand the subject and can use it to apply in my field of learning.
Jeremy is a great tutor. He takes the time to understand my son's strengths and weaknesses, and concentrated his tutoring efforts to best help my son prepare for the ACT.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As the former director of a tutoring center, I have had the privilege of helping dozens of students with the college application process, including the application itself, the college search, essays, interview coaching, and I've even been known to write a letter of recommendation when adequately impressed. My former students have attended universities including Stanford, Claremont McKenna, Berkeley, and USC.
I hold a degree in Physics from Grinnell College and served as the lead author for two editions of a Differential Equations solutions manual. I achieved a 100% (unweighted) average in my college DiffEq course as well, and look forward to discussing the wonderful world of eigenvalues and boundary conditions.
As the former director of a tutoring center, I have developed and maintained dozens of study-skills-focused programs for students of all ages, from kindergarten through college. Each student faces unique challenges within the realm of study skills, and I use a thorough survey and interview to determine how best to achieve the goals of each individual student and family.
