About Jungjo

Hi! I worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory(the Laboratory) for more than 25 years as a scientist, and my main responsibilities were designs and analyses of various stockpile nuclear weapons. Every summer summer students come to the Laboratory to work as interns. As their mentor/tutor I worked with summer students in a project which optimized some designs problems by using calculus and algebra for the most of time. I was a substitute math teacher and voluntary math coach in Los Alamos High School and Los Alamos Middle School, helping students prepare for SAT/ACT math and other math homework (calculus, precalculus, algebra 1, algebra 2, prealgebra, trigonometry and geometry) from schools for many years when I was with the Laboratory. Now I retired from the Laboratory

I began to like math when when I was in elementary school. My love for math was intensified (in particular, calculus) when I was a high school junior. I am still proud of the fact that I won the second place in South Korean High School Student National Math Competition when I was a junior in high school in South Korea.

I specialize in tutoring mathematics (geometry, prealgebra, algebra, precalculus, calculus, trigonometry).

Prior to the first tutoring session with a student, I would like to have the free 30-minute self-assessment session with him/her. During the self-assessment session, we get to know each other and I will ask him/her the realistic goals and standard we together can deliver after taking a lesson from me. Also, I want my student not to hesitate asking questions during a session, in particular, if a physical concept of specific problem is not clear to him/her.

In addition, I will assign a reasonable amount of homework after each session, and the amount of homework to be assigned is negotiable between student and me. The homework from the previous session will be reviewed with my comments.

Twice a year, I will ask my student or parent for verbal or written feedback including suggestions for the improvements of my tutoring methods and in turn I will provide them with my verbal, or written comments on his/her progress. A lesson is free if student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring.

I will be flexible with time. I have a 8-hour cancellation policy and I offer makeup lesson. The location of lesson will be selected based on convenience of student before lesson.

I will greatly appreciate the opportunity for working with you to achieve success in your studies and to enjoy your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

As a substitute math teacher and voluntary math coach in Los Alamos High School, I worked with students for many years in helping them prepare SAT/ACT; precalculus, prealgebra, Algebra 1, algebra 2, trigonometry, geometry homework from schools. In particular, I put an emphasis on mock ACT tests at least once a week to improve test scores and timing followed by review session. I made sure that students understand a basic concept of each ACT mock test problem during a review session. After that, I gave them the similar ACT test problem so that they will be familiar with the ACT test problems including some "tricks" to quickly solve the problem. Also, the mock ACT test will help you learn the hands-on techniques in controlling the timing for the real ACT test. I have BS, MS, and PhD degrees in nuclear engineering. I first liked math when I was in elementary school. My love for math was intensified when I was in high school (in particular precalculus and calculus). I am still proud of the fact I won the second place in South Korean High School Student National Math Competition when I was a high school junior.

Algebra 1

I worked with summer students at Los Alamos National Laboratory(the Laboratory) to help them apply calculus and precalculus to optimize some design problems at the Laboratory. Also, as a substitute math teacher and voluntary math coach in a high school and middle school, I worked with students for many years in helping them prepare for the SAT/ACT; AP Calculus AB & BC; precalculus, prealgebra, Algebra 1, algebra 2, trigonometry, geometry homework from schools.

I made sure that students understood the basic concepts of math. After that, I gave them a reasonable amount homework for practice and better understanding them.

Calculus

I worked with summer students at Los Alamos National Laboratory to apply calculus to optimize some design problems.

Also, As a substitute math teacher and voluntary math coach in Los Alamos High school, I helped students prepare AP calculus AB and BC, and calculus homework from school.

I made sure that students understand a concept of calculus. Then, I gave them a reasonable test problems for practice and for better understanding the basic concept.

First, I began to like math when I was in elementary school. My love for math (in particular calculus) was climaxed when I was a high school junior. I was fascinated with optimization problems.

I am still proud of the fact that I won the second place in South Korean High School Student National Math Competition when I was a high school junior.

I have BS, MS, and PhD degrees in nuclear engineering. I am very familiar with non-linear partial differential equation of Neutron Transport Theory which is a backbone theory of nuclear engineering. We approximate non-linear partial differential equation of Neutron Transport Theory by linearing it to neutron diffusion theory of a linear partial differential equation. This linear partial differential equation is easier to solve numerically using a finite difference equation or a finite element equation.

Geometry

I have more than 5 years' experience in tutoring geometry as a volunteer substitute teacher at Los Alamos Middle School and also as a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I have a reputation as a caring tutor who concentrated on making a student understand the concept of geometry.

Precalculus

I worked with summer students at Los Alamos National Laboratory to apply calculus to optimize some design problems.

Trigonometry

I have at least 3 years experience in tutoring trigonometry as a substitute teacher in Los Alamos High School and also a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I love to tutor young student and I enjoyed some of them to grow intellectually. I had United States Department of Energy "Q" clearance which required to investigate my background thoroughly every 5 years.
