About Kathryn

Kathryn is a professional private tutor who spends her life helping students understand tough concepts in math and science. She is an aficionado of these subjects herself, having spent a rigorous four years at Harvey Mudd College, where she received her BS in Molecular Biology in 2011. There, she studied such subjects as physical chemistry, linear algebra, multivariable calculus, organic chemistry, quantum physics, and molecular biology. Her background has provided her with the foundation to be expected of any professional science tutor.

Kathryn has been tutoring since 2009, when she started volunteering for Upward Bound, a non-profit whose mission is to serve high-potential, low-income high school students. She would wake up early every Saturday to help these students with their math and science homework. It was on these Saturday mornings that Kathryn learned, for example, how to stop talking and let her students think. She attributes her success as a tutor to these early years.

Nowadays, Kathryn spends her time helping her students study for the GRE, the SAT, the ACT, the subject tests, and the AP tests. She helps her students understand statistics and calculus and chemistry and biology and physics. She encourages them all to work intensively outside of lesson time, and when they do, their progress is greatly improved. She also shares with her students the findings that she has discovered in her own studies. (She recently completed a course in complexity theory and is now working through a course in optimizing statistical inferences.) The Spurious Correlations is her recent favorite.

In short, Kathryn's passion for learning, for teaching, for math, and for science serves to make her a high-quality tutor. She is confident in her abilities to help every student who is capable of asking for help, and she offers a free 1-hr consultation so that you can be confident, too, that you're making the right decision in bringing her on.

For the love of learning~~

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a professional ACT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect, for example, that in the English section, you will discover that you need to apply the Process of Elimination to every single question. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

ACT Math

As a professional ACT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect you to discover, for example, that within the Math section, you need to write out every step! I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

ACT Reading

As a professional ACT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect you to discover, for example, that in the Reading section, you need to nail down the Main Idea of the passage. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

ACT Science

As a professional ACT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect, for example, that in the Science section, you will discover that you need to find the Main Idea of each experiment. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

Algebra 1

Math can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to find the intersects of a line and a parabola. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the math, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Algebra 2

Math can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to determine the end behavior of cubic functions. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the math, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

American History

A couple of my science students over the past couple of years have asked me if I could help them with history. I said yes, and I studied my toes off! Now, I have a solid understanding of the history of this country--even more important, though, is that I've learned how best to teach oneself history. Be prepared to put in many hours of your own time outside of tutoring. I've got some extra credit homework for you :)

Anatomy

With my extensive experience in all things science, I have the professional background and tutoring know-how to help you ace your anatomy class. Here's how it works: You send me your assignments 48 hours in advance of our lesson, I review your material and customize my explanations to your style of learning, then we meet and you learn.

ASVAB

I have years of experience helping students master their test-taking skills in many different environments, be it the SAT, the ACT, the GRE, the MCAT--or the ASVAB. The material can be tough, and I'll help you through that. Even more important, though, is your ability to accurately map your intelligence onto the test's questions. This is my specialty.

Biochemistry

My extensive experience with molecular biology means I'm well-equipped to help you through your course. Here's how it works: You send me your assignments 48 hours in advance of our lesson, I review the material and customize my explanations to your learning style, we meet, and you learn.

Biology

Although I hold my degree in the subject, I'll agree that Biology is one of the toughest sciences to master; there's a ton of material, and the field keeps changing its mind about how much of our DNA is actually junk. That said, I am at ease guiding my students through introductory Biology courses, and I encourage my students to learn how to teach themselves.

Calculus

Calculus can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to derive the limit definition of the derivative. With my holistic approach, I help my students with calculus, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

CBEST

I studied for and passed the CBEST test myself. For the math portion: I understand the importance of learning to estimate. For the writing portion: I understand the importance of creating a well-thought-out outline before writing. For the reading section: I understand the importance of the process of elimination. All of these skills I plan on passing on to my students.

Chemistry

I've lost count of the number of chemistry students I've helped. What I do remember is their confusion over periodic trends, orbital diagrams, electron configurations, and unit conversions. With eight chemistry courses and years of tutoring experience under my belt, I am qualified to help you understand the intricacies of this subject.

English

Whether you're learning English or you're mastering its grammar and style, I am the tutor for you. I have an extensive background helping students through this landscape, writing papers, reading critically, and learning new vocabulary. I can even help you understand English idioms!

European History

With my extensive background in tutoring students in myriad subjects, I have had the pleasure of learning and teaching AP European History. Here's how it works: You send me your assignments 48 hours in advance of lesson time, I review the material and develop a tailored lesson plan to match your learning style, we meet, and you learn! In no time, you'll be able to explain to me why the forces that shape our world have done so in the way that they have.

GED

With my extensive background helping students in all kinds of subjects, I am qualified to help you earn your GED. Learning can be tough. That's why I'm prepared to help you not just with math, but with writing and critical reading, too. We will work through problems together and practice writing essays together. Let's go!

General Computer

With my extensive experience helping my students learn how to navigate the world, I am qualified to help you learn how to use your computer to the best advantage. I can even teach you all of the keyboard shortcuts that I know. :)

Genetics

I hold my degree in Molecular Biology from Harvey Mudd College and am qualified to tutor genetics. Over the years, I have helped countless students understand the inner workings of the nucleus...and the mitochondrion :)

Geometry

Geometry can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as knowing how to find the area of a hexagon. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the geometry, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Grammar

Grammar is probably my favorite subject, but don't tell anyone. I'm the one who will point out incorrect usage of "he and I", even though I know that saying it that way makes people feel smart. I have extensive experience picking apart sentence structure with my students, identifying parts of speech and catching dangling modifier errors. Let's get started :)

GRE

You're smart. Yet the GRE seems to fail to reflect your intelligence. This is because the GRE needs you to speak its language--I am here to teach you that language. Test-taking is the most important untaught skill. Indeed, no one ever told me this was important--I had to teach myself. The techniques I have discovered are universal and powerful. And they'll serve you well on test day.

ISEE

I have experience with the ISEE. I know what independent schools are looking for, and am ready to help my students rise to the occasion. Independent schools look for students who can think critically, and who trust their own brains. They're looking for fluency in vocabulary, mathematics, and reading skills. To measure these skills, the ISEE contains four sections: a 20-minute Verbal Reasoning section, a 35-minute Quantitative Reasoning section, a 25-minute Reading Comprehension section, and a 30-minute Mathematics Achievement section. Some basic techniques include: know your roots and prefixes; when you hit a hard QR problem, circle it and move on; and read the RC questions first, then the passage.

Literature

I am here to help you pick apart works of art that happen to be novels. Here's how literature tutoring works: You message me a week in advance of our lesson with the book you need to digest, I read it and digest it myself, we meet, and you learn! We'll be using all the greatest resources, too (like LitCharts!), to help you get a grip on these works.

LSAT

With my extensive experience helping students pass all kinds of standardized test, I am equipped and ready to help you master the LSAT. We will cover any content that's still fuzzy, and we'll cover proper test-taking technique. Here's how it works: You take a practice test every week and read through the answer explanations. For the questions that still remain a mystery, we meet, we discuss, and you learn!

MCAT

I am qualified to tutor the MCAT material because I have taken multiple tests and scored well. I have also tutored MCAT students in the past, and they have improved their scores as a result of their work with me. More specifically, as a Molecular Biologist, I'm qualified to tutor the Biological Sciences section. I'm qualified to tutor the Physical Sciences section because I have extensive experience tutoring Physics and General Chemistry. I am qualified to tutor the Verbal and Writing portions because these sections require critical thinking, with which I also have years of experience.

Microbiology

I hold my BS in Molecular Biology. In studying for this degree, I did a significant amount of work with microbes. I'm comfortable speaking in depth about bacteria, fungi, and viruses. My experience with the Biological Sciences portion of the MCAT keeps my knowledge of microbiology fresh.

Music Theory

I have an extensive background in helping my students learn all kinds of things--including music theory. Whether it's recognizing intervals, formulating the right key signature, or sight-reading, I can help you. Here's how it works: You send me your assignments 48 hours in advance of lesson time, I review the material and build a customized lesson plan tailored to your learning style, we meet, and you learn!

Organic Chemistry

I absolutely love the subject of Organic Chemistry! Having taken four full courses on the subject (including labs), I am prepared to tutor O-Chem. My knowledge ranges from theoretical molecule synthesis to electron pushing; and from liquid-liquid extractions to product purification.

Physical Science

It's no secret that I love science. Indeed, I hold my degree in one of the toughest sciences: Molecular Biology. I can't wait to come over and help your student learn about how the world works. With my extensive background working with students of all ages, I can help your child learn the physical sciences, whether it's about gravity, electricity, or the carbon cycle!

Physics

I love physics! Before you read on, I encourage you to go watch an episode of PBS Space Time so that you can fall in love a little bit, too. Physics can be tough, though, and that's why I've developed a systematic problem-solving approach that will get you through any AP Physics problem.

Want the secrets now? Here you go: Know column, Want column, Equations, Variable check, Define directions, Draw a picture. And make sure you write down your units :)

Physiology

As a professional private tutor, I haven't just mastered the material you'll need to learn--I've mastered the art of teaching. I know that learning can be tough sometimes, but honestly, it's usually because the person teaching it doesn't know how to deliver material such that brains like ours can understand. That's why it usually takes 5 physiology textbooks open on the table for everything to come together. No more! Together, we will navigate the form and function of biological systems.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to add fractions. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the prealgebra, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Precalculus

Precalculus can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding that a cone can be cut to make a circle just as easily as it can be cut to make a parabola. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the precalculus, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Probability

Probability can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to find the intersect of two dependent events. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the probability, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Proofreading

Need to make sure your submission sounds professional? Look no further. I am here to help you walk, step by step, through what you've written. I'll show you where your grammar is off so that you can fix it. I'll show you where your word choice is awkward so that you can fix it. I'll show you where you've used passive voice so that you can make it active, if indeed active voice is appropriate.

PSAT

As a professional PSAT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect, for example, that you will find that the PSAT more accurately reflects your intelligence when you write out your work for each problem. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

SAT Math

As a professional SAT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

SAT Reading

As a professional SAT Reading tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect you to find, for example, that the SAT Reading section treats you much better when you go straight for the Main Idea of the passage. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

SAT Writing

As a professional SAT Writing tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I fully expect, for example, that you will find that the SAT Writing section treats you much better when you apply the Process of Elimination to each problem. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

SSAT

As a professional SSAT tutor, I focus on the moment-by-moment experience my students have while doing each specific type of problem this test offers. By noticing where they get in their own way, my students develop their own techniques and learn how to teach themselves. I serve merely as a guide for this self-discovery and have seen phenomenal results with this approach.

Statistics

Statistics can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to decide whether to accept the null hypothesis. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the statistics, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to find the measures of the angles in a triangle. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the trigonometry, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift.

Writing

As a professional writing tutor, I have helped my students organize their thoughts. I have helped them craft sentences. And I have helped them build their essays into cohesive, whole works. You provide the ideas, and I'll provide the structure!
