About John

My name is John and I have been an educator in one capacity or another for almost all of my adult life. I first began to teach when I was a sophomore at UC Irvine in 2001. I was hired by The Princeton Review and I started teaching SAT preparation classes for the company. I continued to work for the Review through my graduation in 2003 when I received my Bachelor's degree in Political Science and part-time until I returned to UC Irvine in 2007 to pursue my Master's and Teaching Credential.

In 2006, I started to tutor students privately for a variety of academic subjects. I found that I could be particularly helpful with getting students to succeed in Advanced Placement Social Science classes, as I have always been passionate about history, economics and how governments and societies function. After completing graduate school and receiving my Master's in Teaching and Single Subject Social Science Teaching Credential, I worked at a charter school in north San Diego County. While it was a beneficial experience for professional growth, I realized how much I enjoyed privately tutoring individual students and small groups of students and I decided to pursue a career as a full-time private educator. Since 2010 I have had the distinct pleasure of helping hundreds of students succeed and achieve their academic goals and have been privileged to help proud parents enjoy the accomplishments of their children.

Currently, I am completing a Master's degree in History and I am still tutoring as I continue my education. I have years of experience helping students write essays and understand literature. I also have taught grammar and SAT/ACT Reading and English for almost 15 years.

It is my sincere hope and utmost ambition to ensure that every student I spend time with is in a better place academically for having seen me. I care very deeply about ensuring that my students accomplish their goals and that I help them to reach their full potential. Additionally, I understand the stress that ambitious students and their parents must cope with, and with every client I strive to ameliorate the tremendous pressure that students and their parents often experience.

Over the years that I have been tutoring students, I have been able to help a lot of gifted, goal-oriented students achieve the lofty aspirations to which they set their sights. With my assistance, SAT and ACT test takers have been able to dramatically increase their scores, in some cases doubling their starting score. I have helped students severely struggling with AP classes manage to pass and those who have targeted A's in those classes and 5's on their tests have been able to get they results they desired.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I began to work on helping students prepare for the SAT and ACT in 2001 when I was hired by the Princeton Review. I worked at the Review part-time until 2006 when I began the process of going to graduate school to become a credentialed teacher. At that point, I began to see students independently for test preparation.

Since finishing graduate school and receiving my Single Subject Social Science teaching credential and Master's in Teaching, I have continued to work with students on test preparation. I have helped hundreds of students for over twelve years prepare for and succeed in achieving their scoring goals on both the SAT and ACT.

CBEST

I took and passed the CBEST exam on my first attempt in 2007 so that I could enter the UC Irvine MAT program. It is one of a number of standardized tests I have taken and passed for state certification, including getting approved from my Single Subject Social Science Teaching Credential. I have also spent most of my adult life helping test-takers pass a variety of standardized tests. I started teaching SAT preparation for the Princeton Review in 2001, and have worked to prepare students for the ACT, SAT, GMAT and GRE exams.

Political Science

As an undergraduate at UC Irvine, I completed my B.A. in Political Science in 2003. I finished my major requirements by my sophomore year and I had a 3.66 major GPA. I have been tutoring students for both AP American Government and AP Comparative Government for over ten years and both are directly related to political science. Further, I have a Single Subject Social Science Teaching Credential for the state of California, also from UC Irvine.

Religion

I have instructed students for over ten years in the basics of major world religions including, but not limited to, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Shinto and Zoroastrinism. This has mostly been as a part of AP World History and other AP social science courses, but has also been a part of courses focusing exclusively on religion. I also have a Single Subject Social Science teaching credential for the state of California and I am currently working on a Master's in history.

Social Studies

I am credentialed to teach Social Science in the state of California. I received my teaching credential and Master's in Teaching from UC Irvine in 2008. I have been tutoring students in various Social Science subjects for almost ten years and have worked with dozens of students on various Social Science subjects.

World History

I have tutored students in various social science subjects since 2005. In 2008 I received my Single Subject Social Science teaching credential from UC Irvine and my Master's in Teaching. I have helped students with just about every type of social science class that exists and I have had great success with students of all ability levels.
