In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring since junior high school and have been doing college counseling / advising since my senior year of high school, through college, and through graduate school. I have worked with an educational specialist (PhD) to develop my own study skills emphasizing content retention, efficiency, and application strategy. Over the past 2 years, I have worked with high school and junior high school students who, under my guidance, have been accepted into the top private institutions in the country. The application of my methodology and college counseling skills, which I now teach, have also gotten me an Ivy League undergraduate education (at the number one university in the world) and have also gotten me accepted into one of the top graduate programs in business as well. I am highly qualified, patient, extensively understand the application process and know what traits and skills to underscore for students to get accepted.
From junior high school through college, I tutored elementary school students in a wide range of subjects. I am able to communicate effectively with students and relay information in a teaching style that is accessible, productive, and fun. In my experience with students K-6, I have noted the importance of being compassionate and understanding the material from students' perspectives while maintaining focus in order to help students and parents get results.
As a high school junior and senior, I took an extracurricular course with a reading and educational specialist targeted towards study skills, time management, note taking, learning and retention efficiency. The course was designed for a broad range of ages and was geared to target students' specific needs. I used these skills in my own preparation and as a tool during my student tutoring.
