The sections passed were CBEST math, reading, and writing, and CSET reading, language, literature, history and social sciences, science and math, PE, human development, and the visual and performing arts.

I taught as a substitute in the San Francisco public schools, worked for a publishing company as a writer analyst for 12 years, wrote news and feature stories as a correspondent for a daily newspaper. I owned a tutoring franchise for three years with over 3,000 hours of tutoring behind me.

Testing reveals where the student weaknesses are, and lessons should be focused on where the problems are, not on what the student already knows. Testing is used to mark progress, not assign a grade, and each test that is passed helps the student overcome the fear of testing.

I look at standardized test results to assess grade level. The goal is to bring the student a little beyond grade level. Homework depends on what the student needs, and periodic assessments in the form of completed lesson plans are given.

My goal for the SAT/ACT is a 100-200 point increase, but there is no guarantee. Others may claim a guarantee; I do not. Over a period of seven months, I brought one 11th grader from 500 on the reading section to 650 and from 500 on the writing section to 690. We went through 70 past SAT exams.
Ideally, preparation for the SAT/ACT should begin 5-6 months to a year prior to the test, or the same amount of time after the first try and before the second.

For the SAT/ACT I use many different study guides, other salutary test prep books and grammar books, and Kahn Academy.

If tutoring is done in the home, another adult 21 or older must be present. Tutoring at the dining room table has proved to be the best, but libraries are satisfactory locations.

Each student is my most treasured subject, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Proofreading

As a writer/analyst for 12 years at CCH (Wolters Kluwer), I wrote newsy stories, summaries of tax cases and tax legislation, and editorial content for 10 state publications, both in print and online. About nine years into my time at CCH, all of the proofreaders were terminated. Up until that time, I worked with the proofreaders and learned a lot from them, and for the last three years at CCH, all of the writer/analysts did their own proofreading. We proofread each other's work before anything was published. We had to be absolutely correct regarding content. I issued no retractions. I wrote news and feature stories for the Napa Valley Register under the direction of the managing editor. I just ended a three-year project that resulted in a great novel (I think). Two co-workers from the Academy of Art University edited. We worked together to perfect every aspect of the novel, not just grammar and usage, etc. A well-known coach is helping me find a top agent, and seven respected authors have agreed to accept a review copy.

5-star tutor!!

Bob has been tutoring my son for only a few weeks, but I can't think of a better fit. He is organized and very well prepared with lesson plans/tests/handouts, etc. Within hours of the lesson, I receive a detailed recap of their session, including progress report, areas of focus, and homework assignment. Most importantly, has built a great rapport with my son who looks forward to his sessions. I can't recommend Bob enough. He is a wonderful educator that takes time to truly know his students. We feel very lucky to have found him!

Knowledgeable and dedicated!

It was the 1st lesson with Bob. He is prepared and have a good game plan for helping my son with his SAT English. We also like his style of tutoring where he does the same test as the student side by side and then go over the result and learning.
