About Alan

I have a PhD from Columbia University. I have taught Mathematical Methods in Physics I and II and Mathematical Methods in Engineering I and II. These are advanced courses, the backbone of which is calculus: extending one's background in ordinary and partial differential equations, linear algebra, numerical methods, vector and tensor analyses, Laplace and Integral Transforms, Complex, variables, etc.

My research has been interdisciplinary which required some strength across a number of fields. I eventually ended up teaching in most of them as witness the following list: Non-calculus Introductory Physics I, II (primarily for premeds), Calculus Physics I, II, III, Astronomy, Modern Physics, Chemistry I, II, Physics, Chemistry and Organic Chemistry for Medical Technicians, Oceanography, Geology, Natural Resources (minerals, energy) and Sustainability, and others.

You may reach me through Wyzant to schedule classes or discuss other issues.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

I've taught astronomy at the college/university level.

Physics

I taught University Physics I,II,III (calculus based), College Physics I,II, III (no calculus), Modern Physics (quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and atomic physic), Applied Advance Mathematics for Physicists, Fluid Dynamics, Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, etc.

Knowledgable and Learned

Alan had a good feel for what Tim was missing from his teacher, and improved his vision on how to go forward, as well as his morale. Alan also obviously knew the subject matter. We hope to have another session before the next exam.
