Education is the most powerful weapon and I am a true believer that those who have extensive knowledge in an area should try their best to pass on that knowledge. My passion is learning and I strive to help my students feel the same way about learning. Learning can be fun with the right mentor. Be it a complicated math problem or the task of learning all the tenses in French, it can be successfully completed if there's someone to point you in the right direction.
I have a lot of experience both as a tutor and as a teacher for students ranging from ages 7-24. During my undergraduate years, I worked as a student teacher for a second grade class while simultaneously tutoring fellow undergraduates. My methods include helping the student see the big picture and then breaking it down into small manageable chunks, as this is less intimidating, entering into discussions about problems to get a clear picture of the problem areas, giving quizzes to test their knowledge and providing challenging homework that will help reinforce the ideas that were taught during the session.
My sessions aren't a time for me to lecture about the topic. It's a time for the student to ask me questions and for for us to then discuss the problem until a solution is arrived upon. I do not spoon feed my students and act more as a guide who helps the student reach the right conclusions. I find that this method yields a much higher retention rate and understanding of the subject than just providing students with answers with no explanations.
As a recent graduate from UCSC with a BS in Biology, I am capable of providing help in Biology, Chemistry, basic Physics, Math (pre-algebra, algebra 1/2, trig, stats (college level), geometry, calc 1/2), English and French.
I hope to hear from you soon and to be able to help you achieve academic success! Sharika has made the "light come on" with me and my Chemistry class. Where I was once in the dark with understanding the basic principals, Sharika has been like turning on the light in a otherwise dark room. I'm now helping some of my friends to understand our classes. Thanks, Sharika.
Sharika was very patient but got down to business quickly. Really felt she will make a difference and well worth the money!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
