About Steve

I have a BA in Economics and an MBA in General Business, both from California State University Northridge. My undergraduate GPA was 3.8 and my graduate school GPA was 3.6.

I have worked in the private accounting sector for more than 25 years. I have been a Division Controller for the past 9 years, during which time I have gained practical experience in the following areas: financial statement preparation and analysis; budgeting & forecasting; cost accounting; financial modeling; capital expenditure justification; MS Excel; and MS Access.

I have tutored several co-workers, mostly in Accounting. When my sister was in her mid-twenties, she was working as a waitress. She decided, out of the blue, that she wanted to get a degree and become a teacher. In her first semester, she took a math class in which she failed her first exam. It was at that point that she asked if I could tutor her. I did, and she ended the semester with a C+ in the math class (this inspite of failing the first exam). She went on to complete her Bachelor's degree at CSUN, and from there she went on to become an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. That was my very first experience as a tutor. I loved it.

I think that I bring a nice combination of patience and enthusiasm to the people I teach. I would only consider tutoring subjects that I feel very confident in, because I would want my students to feel confident. I am far more interested in building solid fundamentals than I am in helping a student get through the next exam. It is important to me not just to have the student learn the subject matter, but also for the student to learn to enjoy the subject.

Sincerely,
Steve D

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft Access

I first taught myself Microsoft Access in November 2011, and have been using it for business applications ever since. I fully understand tables, queries, reports and forms. I understand how to upload data from Excel to Access in order to create a more robust database. I also know how to download data from Access to Excel in order to examine smaller chunks of data.

I also taught myself programming in the VBA for applications language. I have written numerous programs, though VBA, that serve to enhance the standard software applications at the workplace. My programs have tapped into numerous accounting, payroll and ERP systems. Along with a friend/co-worker, we developed a stand-alone shipping program which replaced the hard-to-use shipping program built into the company ERP system. That stand-alone program lasted, with few if any problems, for almost 3 years - until a corporate mandate forced our division to transition to a new ERP system.

I will offer one other specific example of my work: I once wrote a program which linked to both our accounting software and our ADP payroll software. The program gave us the ability to create an automated, instantaneous payroll journal, without having to go through the ADP payroll report and enter numbers into a spreadsheet.
