About Huijin

A native of China, I was born and raised in Inner Mongolia and completed my undergraduate studies in Beijing, where I taught English for four years before migrating to the United States in 2007. I received my Master’s degree in TESOL at American University in Washington, DC, in December 2009. I have taught Chinese and English for over ten years.

I have taught various student bodies, from elementary school to college students. Given my extensive teaching experience and training in language instruction, I have received the award of Beijing Excellent English Teacher in recognition of the competence demonstrated by my students, and the prestigious Hall of Nations Merit Award at American University.

I use a wide variety of methods to achieve these successes. Above all, I aspire to teach not only correct language forms, but also the cultural connotations and pragmatic usages of language. I design lessons that use authentic materials and real life tasks in order to inspire students’ enthusiasm as well as their cultural education. I carefully design scaffolding activities to make learning objectives achievable, I make modifications based on students’ reflections and assessments, and I offer individual help to struggling students. These strategies enable students to improve their overall communicative competence very quickly and feel more confident and motivated in learning the target language.

I believe that the key to successful education is love. Successful educators should be great observers and professionals who love what they do, love their students, and have the passion to pass the love of learning to their students. However, as every child is different, it is often challenging and almost impossible to pave one perfect path for everyone. And that’s why personalized student centered education is so beautiful. I keep good rapport with students by learning about them using language as a tool, I design lessons based on students’ needs and interests, and I give various choices when they do projects so students feel they are in charge of their own learning.

I not only expect my students to reach high academic standard but also strive to help them to become lifelong learners. I model this expectation by consistently pursuing professional development opportunities, including conferences (CLTA, ACTFL, CLEF, TCLT), intensive summer workshops (STARTALK, AP Summer Institute, Confucius Class Institute, TPRS workshop, IB DP Mandarin Workshop) and study groups with colleagues. Such ongoing learning equips me with knowledge of up-to-date technology tools for effective language teaching. For example, I use Quizlet and Memrize to help students learn Chinese characters, Socrative to reinforce grammar, FluentU and Langlang Chinese to expose students to short authentic video clips and story books, and Smartboard to allow students to collaborate freely. Outside of class, I interact with students through the use of such tools as Google Form, Audiodropbox, Pinyin Tutor and Haiku. Professional Development opportunities also enabled me to develop friendship/network with other excellent teachers all over the world who enabled me to bring my students into a larger learning community. For example, my students are “friends” with Mandarin learners of Columbus School of Girls via Quizlet. They follow their peers’ learning, share their vocabulary sets, and also compete with each other on the vocabulary games, which they find very challenging and fun.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

Before relocating to CA, I'd been working as full time Chinese teacher in an independent school for four years, teaching 6-10th grade students. I've had solid training in AP and IB Chinese. Then I worked in another private school teaching high school students for a year in CA.
