Our Running a private school in our home for over 15 years enabled our own four children--and numerous other children- to reach their academic potential. Our oldest son graduated from our school, became a Fulbright Scholar, and is now a History Professor at a University in Virginia.
I personally have tutored/taught American History, English Grammar and Composition, Spanish, and Biology, and more recently ESL. I've had the joyful privilege of teaching these subjects to Jr/Sr High students, college students, and students in Home School Co-ops. With a BS in Animal Production and years of experience teaching Biology (including dissection labs), I enjoy helping students understand Biological concepts.
Nonetheless, my greatest passion is helping a student become proficient and confident in writing and speaking English. Whether that student is a high school junior writing a research paper or a newly arrived ESL student learning to converse in English, I thoroughly enjoy helping the student develop his/her ability to communicate in English. I have a TESOL Certification through Cal State Hayward and plenty of experience teaching Literary Analysis, Writing, and Grammar.

My freshman has never wanted or had tutors before. She is NOT a fan of studying in general. She LOVES Susan and looks forward to her weekly essay writing lessons. Susan has inspired my daughter to ENJOY reading 'high school'-assigned literature (I can't believe it). And my daughter shocked me the other day by saying, "I want to take AP English," and she also said to me, "If I were a teacher, I would teach English."
Thanks for your kind words, Susan. I thoroughly enjoy working with Isis as she is bright, inquisitive, and very insightful in her analysis of literature. I'm also impressed by her willingness to write and re-write her essays--a quality of a good writer.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
