I love reading and writing myself, and have had teaching and tutoring experience in reading comprehension in all academic subjects, writing succinctly and meaningfully, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, and spelling. After many years of classroom teaching in both public and private schools, as well as teaching small groups and 1-1, I can say that my passion is helping others succeed in their goals. I would be happy to serve you.
I have been a tutor trainer for other tutors with our local literacy council, (Partners in English Language Learning) and tutored adults 1-1 myself in that organization, assisted many students at NU and Bear River to help them with their homework, essays, and Senior Projects, started and taught the the remedial reading program called Title I at Magnolia Intermediate School, was Director of Education with Sylvan Learning Center when it was in Grass Valley, and have taught almost all the grades K-12. With my experience, I am able to use a variety of strategies and methods in order to help students learn, which is one of my biggest pleasures in life. I have a valid CA and valid Hawaii Teaching Certificate.
I have prepared many students for standardized tests and have been an examiner for the GED Exam. Currently I am an examiner for the HiSET tests, which is the California State approved High School Equivalency test.
My experience includes teaching all the subjects in Elementary Education in California and in Hawaii. Students improve in Spelling when they know basic Spelling rules and the fundamentals of handwriting, which I am happy to teach them in fun and creative ways. My students have made amazing gains and developed a new interest in their studies after learning some new Study Skills because they enjoy working smarter, not harder.
I have had experience in teaching Phonics at the Kindergarten and First and Second Grade levels, as well as helping students "catch up" in the upper elementary grades. I have a Masters Degree in the field of Second Language Literacy so I understand the intricate relationships involved in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Even students in upper elementary school, and yes, even at the high school and adult levels, have advanced rapidly when they learn the fundamentals of literacy adapted to their specific needs in a 1-1 setting. A student with a learning disability is especially fun for me to work with because I can use my knowledge to diagnose problems and help the student increase skills, which increases self-esteem and encourages perseverance. I also enjoy communicating with the classroom teacher for IEP conferences, etc., if permission is given by parents, in order to coordinate tutor sessions precisely with classroom work.
I have a passion to help people succeed academically and enjoy the challenge of making learning relevant and fun. I would be very happy to hear your story, your interests, your goals, in order to determine how I can serve you. Please contact me in order to learn more and schedule a lesson. I look forward to meeting you, either in person, or online. Susan brought my stepdaughter's college English grade up to a final grade of an A in just over a month. She was able to determine areas that needed focus and strengthen understanding and comprehension in those areas very quickly. She also prepared her for all tests and quizzes in addition to making sure all homework was done correctly. We would not hesitate to hire her again. I very highly recommend her to anyone with high expectations in search of an exceptional tutor.
Thank you Michael for letting me know your step-daughter raised her grade to an A after we worked together. She worked hard, increased her skills, and deserves it!
My son has steadily increased his confidence in high school English having Susan as his tutor. She has helped him with the tools he needs to understand and succeed in this subject. Highly recommend Susan as a tutor.
Learning English as a second languages, to my son and myself. Every time when we meet Susan, she is ready with the lesson. Also she does everything to help us to understand.
I love to see your progress each week! I know you will keep on practicing English at home as much as you can, too.
Our daughter has already gained so much from the few appointments she has gone to. Susan has wonderful techniques to help with spelling that translate well at home. We couldn't be happier with the help we are receiving.
Thank you. I, too, am so happy to see your daughter's progress in our first few sessions!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My students with dyslexia of various age levels have succeeded through my classroom and tutor experiences as Director of Education at Sylvan Learning Center in Grass Valley, when I established the Title I Remedial Reading and Writing program at Magnolia Intermediate School, and as a Reader in the English Departments of NU High School and Bear River High School helping with essays as well as with Senior Projects. I have personal experience as well with what it is like to have a dyslexic child, so I know that success comes from help and intervention from the whole family as well as having good communication with the schools. Of course, each student is unique with their own strengths and weaknesses, but I have found success with each dyslexic student by giving consideration to determining the learning style and using it primarily; by establishing a warm, respectful, encouraging professional relationship; by providing a non-distracting environment; by choosing a variety of appropriate traditional and innovative strategies; and by changing each learning activity frequently during each learning session.
I have a valid California State Teaching Credential No. GT 160365 and a valid Hawaii State Teacher-Specialist-Administrator Certificate No. A-04929. I earned them by teaching all the elementary school grades K-8 at one time or another. I also have a BA from UCSB, where I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish and a Master of Education Degree from Heritage University, where my major field of study was Second Language Literacy.
I have trained in the Spalding Method of Handwriting, as well as the Palmer Method. I have taught the elementary grades where we teach the transition between printing and cursive with success. I enjoy teaching handwriting so students can succeed.
I have taught all the grades K-College, most recently in Gr. 1,2, and 5. I know what is required in Nevada County at each grade level. Many students I have worked with have benefited from my knowledge of how to fill in the gaps when they are struggling in the upper elementary grades. I have taught Open Court, the most widely used reading-writing curriculum and have those materials, as well as my own innovative strategies.
