College Counseling

I am a graduate of the University of Southern California. I entered the field of College Admission in the mid-eighties and have witnessed the ever changing landscape and increased competitiveness of the admission process. In my role in higher education my experience includes having worked on what the college admission profession refers to as “both sides of the desk”. At a local private school, I served as a college counselor where I advised students and their parents about the college search and application process, wrote letters of recommendation and presented to students and parents during evening programs. I taught college counseling courses, maintained and tracked data in Naviance, met and worked with college admission officers, kept updated on college admission criteria/trends, administered standardized tests, and helped students to navigate through the maze known as the application process. As an Associate Director of Admission at the University of Southern California, my primary duties included coordinating student athletic admission, designing the recruitment and retention plan for underrepresented and first-generation college going students, planning large scale events for these populations and designing workshops, outreach events, and managing a file review load of approximately 600-1,000 during each admission cycle. I have had the opportunity to work with various colleges bound community organizations on both a local and national level. I also established relationships with a number of schools in the charter, public and private arena helping their students to prepare for the college admission process, identifying the potential fit to USC, and advocating on their applicant’s behalf with my colleagues on the admission committee. Working with campus stakeholders developing workshops for students and their families highlighting the college application and admission process and have given presentations at College Board and Western Association of College Admission Counselors Conferences.

Fabulous!

Mel is a wonderful college counselor. She’s thorough, patient, and extremely knowledgeable about what universities are looking for. It’s a daunting process and Mel makes it more palatable. We won’t wish we had found her earlier. She is also extremely responsive. I can’t recommend her enough if you’re in need of college admissions and applications help.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Mel is absolutely wonderful! She is everything her profile states but so much more. That's a bonus! It is very clear that she has a wealth of experience and is well informed. Mel is insightful and simply has a way of connecting with my son in ways I could not accomplish. Mel goes above and beyond the call of duty. My son, who is a high school senior, told me that he appreciates the distinction between the personal assistance of Mel as his college advisor and attending college workshops. The assistance of an advisor allows him to get down to the fine details of the entire process. I highly recommend Mel. She is the breath of fresh air that we needed.
