About Anthea

I have many years of teaching experience at both the elementary and preschool levels in various private school situations. I have a lifetime Standard Teaching Credential and a lifetime CA. Children's Center Permit. I have passed the CBEST. In 2000 I was chosen Walmart teacher of the year.

I am usually able to motivate children to succeed and to really get excited about learning. As well as books and paper and pencil exercises, I use many hands on experiences to make lessons more interesting. I have collected many materials and books over the years that I use to enhance my lessons and have created a complete kindergarten curriculum to use as a reference. At my stage of life, I am really just interested in using my knowledge and experience to help children and I gain great satisfaction upon hearing from both parents and teachers how much the children I am working with have improved!

I have many very effective books, paper and pencil exercises and "hands on" materials that I use to teach young children important arithmetic fundamentals.

I particularly enjoy and seem to have a good ability to teach pre-reading and reading skills to young children, I utilize different aspects of various reading programs so as to combine phonics, language experience, sight-reading and whole language and have created a program suitable for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. I have an excellent reading series that I use wherein each book builds on the vocabulary of the preceding book. I have probably taught close to one thousand children to read using this method and have been 100% successful

I have created a phonics curriculum that has been very successful in teaching phonics sounds to young children. It includes movement, crafts, paper and pencil exercises and more. I also tailor beginning reading lessons to each child by teaching what I call "one look" words (words that have personal meaning to the child) as the child's first reading experience. I also use their personal experiences as the subject of their first "stories". For older children I use Modern Curriculum Press Plaid Phonics Books to build a great phonics foundation.

I would very much appreciate hearing from you if you have a child who is just starting out on his/her educational journey and you would like to provide him/her with an excellent foundation or if you have a child who is struggling and needs a little extra help to catch up and possibly surpass the other children in his/her grade. I charge $30/hr. and am willing to
come to your home or to meet at a nearby library if that is more convenient.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I am a retired elementary teacher with many years experience teaching early elementary grades and preschool. I specialize in teaching young children to read and have created a successful phonics program suitable for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.
My program includes movement, arts and crafts, coloring, cutting, and paper and pencil exercises that I created myself. When I taught in the classroom I also included science and literature. I have taught and tutored many children and have been 100% successful in teaching phonics and reading skills.
