Bio

My name is Kelly and I'm a writer with ten years of experience in the field and over fifteen years of experience tutoring and teaching. Since graduating with my Cultural Anthropology B.A. in 2006, I've gone on to obtain a M.A. in Public Policy and conduct research in Germany and Iceland. I am currently finishing a second M.A. in Literature, Culture, and Media, completing a novella as my thesis. While academic experience is relevant, I've also taught all ages (age 4 to adults twice my age) as a certified ESL teacher with experience teaching reading, writing, and English. I've completed several tests and am have several years of experience teaching test prep for the SAT, GRE, TOEFL, and CBEST in addition to reading, writing and English.

My motto is to accept students wherever they are and establish the groundwork for academic success by building a lesson plan tailored to students' needs. As an avid reader and writer, addressing skills at the appropriate level is crucial to success as both children and adults. I spend time preparing and structure lessons after an initial assessment that consists a conversation and quiz to gauge what is appropriate for the student. Following a quiz, parent/self feedback, and an initial lesson working together, I will put together a plan to help yourself or your child learn the subject matter and improve. My technique includes creating engaging and fun activities that related to the subject matter, test-taking strategies, practice, conversation (for English learning), and interactive games to help children learn grammar. In the case of younger readers, I'll break lessons into segments of reading an age-appropriate book aloud, having assisted reading practice, blending/phonics activities, and dramatization/story creation to encourage their full engagement in the story. As children grow older, I focus on questions related to comprehension to ensure that children fully understand the story and any deeper themes, as well as how these themes relate to their lives.

My availability is open during the weeknights, and I'm free on most weekends. I'm happy to come to you and welcome any questions that you have about scheduling and creating a comprehensive plan to improve. I respond to all messages within 48-72 hours of receiving them.
