About Samantha

I recently graduated with a 3.6 GPA and completed my degree in 3 years from UC Davis in June 2016 with an Economics degree and English minor. Currently, I’m employed at a top tutoring company that only hires college-graduated individuals with exceptional tutoring skills, a top SAT/ACT score, and a high GPA, but I’ve worked at several top tutoring centers in the Silicon Valley. I scored a 2260 (98th percentile or top 2% in the nation) on my 2012 SAT and a 1530 on the new 2016 SAT (99th percentile or top 1% in the nation). In addition to tutoring over 50 students over the past 4 years, I’ve volunteered over 600 hours of community service working on projects I care about in my community. In my spare time, I also am a founding member of an online social venture/start-up providing health resources to those in need.

Tutoring is my passion, and as a result I deeply care about my students and provide a holistic view of teaching my students. I recognize that tutoring is not just about teaching, but also about mentoring the student and working with his/her skillset to help my students grow and learn in the best way for them. Rather than having a strict teacher-student relationship, I like to develop a mentor-student relationship, because it is personal and I can be more understanding of my students’ needs.

I create individualized lesson plans and teaching methods for every student, and I specialize in college application essays, SAT or ACT prep, and language arts, essay writing, and grammatical skills. I also help my students develop their test-taking and time management strategies for the SAT/ACT, and my style of teaching places importance on the basics of grammar, writing, math and effective test taking; I believe that once a student has this foundation down, any question on the SAT or AP exams is completely approachable and easy to solve. In juxtaposition with my own personal test-taking strategies, I also implement the same strategies taught at many of the top SAT prep centers. I can also work separately or together as a college advisor in order to perfect your child's undergraduate application to any university or college, guide them in creating the most attractive application, and help them produce an unrivaled essay. For students that need help in English or writing, I lay down the basics for your child, show ways of developing creativity, and teach them how to write effectively and well. I work with your child's talents and provide a very personalized experience that changes dynamically in order to achieve your child's highest potential.

As a recent University of California, Davis alumni, I took the AP English, AP Literature, and SAT exams recently three years ago, and I have been trained to take the new exams, so I have an advantage in knowing exactly what the current tests ask of students as well as what strategies should be learned in order to achieve a score that is highly desirable and sought after by top universities. From working with over 50 different students, I understand what most colleges are looking for in a student, and I can guide your child in writing brilliant essays to get noticed in the midst of tens of thousands of applicants. My most recent students have been accepted by USC, UC Berkeley, Duke University, and UC San Diego to name a few.

My education began in elementary school at the private school Challenger School, where I learned from the best grammar and literature teachers to build my foundation in English. Later on, I went on to attend Leland High School where I was a member of the number one speech and debate team in the nation and first medalist of various speech tournaments, President of the National Honor Society (organization that connects academically achieving students with volunteer opportunities in the community), volunteer of over 500+ hours from tutoring underprivileged children in low income areas, page editor for the award-winning school newspaper The Charger Account, and winner of numerous accolades for my involvement in the community including: Leland High School's Jefferson Award (given to one student once a year for exemplary work in the community) and Senior Recognition Award for Academic Work and Involvement in the Community. I went on to UC Davis to be on the dean’s honor roll multiple times and co-founded GIRLS Academy, a mentorship program connecting college women with underprivileged middle school girls. I work as a tutor not only because I truly love teaching and working with kids, but also to help fund my online social venture providing health resources for those in need.

When I’m not busy with tutoring and all my different projects, I LOVE Thai food, veggie-ing out on my couch and watching hours of TV or movies shamelessly, and traveling to places I can’t afford but go to anyways.

I hope to meet you soon and am excited to work with you and your child to accomplish great things!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I've worked as a college counselor for multiple top test prep companies, and I've tutored many students successfully in college preparation. In addition, I currently attend UC Davis, and I went through the college admissions process myself, so I understand the ins and outs of applying to private universities, public universities, and private or public colleges. I wrote my own personal statement to get into multiple University of California schools and private universities, and I also worked with many different peer editors (teachers, counselors) and discussed what schools were looking for in my personal essay. I've researched and spoke to many individuals working at different college admissions at different schools (UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Stanford, Santa Clara University, ect.) and understand how to highlight students' goals and work with them to become the most desirable candidate possible. I also have extensive knowledge in guiding them through the challenging process and work as a mentor to help my students get into the college of their choice.

Elementary (K-6th)

My experience with teaching comes from working at the nonprofit organization Grail Family Services in order to provide free tutoring to underprivileged children that normally could not afford any tutoring. I am currently working towards a bachelor in managerial economics at University of California, Davis and self taught myself to achieve passing grades in all six of my AP tests as well as a SAT score in the 95th percentile in the nation. I received a premium education from a top private school in San Jose, CA teaching me all the basics in most subjects, and I received a cumulative GPA of 3.7 in high school.

Public Speaking

In my formative high school years, I was heavily involved in my school's award winning speech and debate team where I learned from national winning speech and debate speakers. I placed third in 2009 and second in 2010 at Santa Clara University's Speech and Debate tournament in Oratorical Interpretation. I have also gone to win second place at Los Gatos High School's Speech and Debate tournament in 2009. Besides Speech and Debate competitions, I participated in Miss Teen San Jose/Oakland and placed 5th runner up against 100 other girls, a award given not for just grace and elegance but for my interviewing skills and ability to speak and hold my confidence in front of hundreds of people.

SAT Reading

I provide experienced, individualized, and direct tutoring and advising to individuals that need help in scoring high on their SAT, AP English, and AP Literature tests that is time-efficient. I can also work separately or together as a University of California Advisor in order to perfect your child's undergraduate application to any of the Universities of California, guide them in creating the most attractive application, and help them produce an unrivaled essay.

As a current University of California, Davis student, I personally took the AP English, AP Literature, and SAT exams recently two years ago, so I have an advantage in knowing exactly what the current tests ask of students, and what strategies should be learned in order to achieve a score that is highly desirable and sought after by top universities. I know the right methods and tactics to get your child a better score, guaranteed. In addition, I understand what the Universities of California are looking for in a student, and I can guide your child in writing brilliant essays to get noticed in the midst of tens of thousands of applicants.

Study Skills

My score for the SAT is in the 95th percentile in the nation, and all of it is attributed to my own self-studying during three months prior to the exam. I passed all of my six AP classes in high school, and I also graduated with a 3.7 along with accolades for my extracurricular work. I currently attend a top 50 university, and I know exactly how to study efficiently and effectively in order to achieve high scores.

Unbelievably good!

Samantha has proven to be wonderful in many ways. First, my son feels much more confident heading into his SAT test (this weekend - fingers crossed!). This of course is the most important thing. But, she is also wonderful at being available - I can simply text her and we arrange things very quickly and easily. If there is a conflict, we manage it easily in this way as well. She shows up when she s
