About Bryan

I am a professor of English at Foothill College in Los Altos, CA. I have a Master's Degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University and a BA in Linguistics from Michigan State University. I work with professionals in speech coaching and accent reduction utilizing a unique approach that blends practice and theory to achieve personal speech and accent goals. I specialize in vowel coaching and practical application. I have previously worked at the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center coaching students in critical reading, writing, and development skills.

As for my tutoring style, it is best to start with the basics. Once a student can understand the basic concepts of an idea, they can use that as the structural support for the harder, more advanced concepts. With things like language and music, it is best for a student to understand how it works, not just repeat what is given to them. To understand these subjects I like to go underneath the outer layer and look at the concept from within its core and basic structure. I believe a student should never be given the answer, but rather be guided in the correct direction with tools they need to be able to find it on their own.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have worked with individuals in musical identification of sound and sound patterns. We have focused on musical scales and how they intertwine with each other. Understanding the patterns of music will train the ear and the mind optimally, when creating one's own patterns.

English

At the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center, I plan, organize, and lead discussions on selected texts and literature that relate back to planned writing prompts.

ESL/ESOL

My work at the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center has many students that are ESL speakers. Therefore I need to tailor specific strategies to their needs in critical reading, writing, and development.

I also teach accent modification, speech coaching, and listening skills to international students and professionals.

French

I studied French Language and Culture at Universite Laval in Quebec, as well as receiving a minor degree in French from Michigan State University. I am conversationally apt. As a Linguist, I am able to explain French in a way average French instructors cannot! By using Linguistic techniques I can help you address your weaknesses in French at a root level.

Grammar

My work at the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center coaching students in writing and development skills, that entails discussions on grammar fundamentals and sentence structure.

Guitar

I have approximately 8 years of musical experience with a wide variety of musical instruments (mostly stringed instruments). I have worked with individuals, focusing on the basics of guitar and guitar theory. Integral parts of music, like chords, progressions, and scales all play an integral part. Timing, technique, and repetition are other key parts to this musical puzzle.

Literature

At San Jose State University, I coached groups of students on critical thinking in literature. This entailed identification of key themes, symbols, and logic within a story. We extrapolated from these identifications, rationalizing them and understanding how the relate to the world at the time of the book's release.

Phonics

Through my work with L2 speakers, I have been able to observe, record, and teach individuals the importance of sound production and identification. The pillars of my critical work in Phonetics, Phonology, Laboratory Phonetics, and Articulation have all attributed to my ability to impart this skill of Phonics onto others. I have a Master's Degree in Linguistics.

Proofreading

At the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center, I coach writing skills. This entails reviewing and discussing essay content revisions.

Public Speaking

I have experience working with individuals and classrooms on the cornerstones of Public Speaking. We focus on organization of thoughts, clarity of these thoughts, and rationality of these thoughts. With subjects that people are most passionate about, it is important to have poise and rationality, rather than emotion. A confident speaker controls an audience much better than a speaker that lacks this bravado.

Reading

At the San Jose State University Language Development Center and the San Jose State University Student Athletic Success Center I coaching students in critical reading with literature chosen through a curriculum.

Speech

I have a Bachelor's in Linguistics from Michigan State University and have taken coursework in Phonetics, Phonology, Laboratory Phonetics, and Articulation. I am currently working on a Master's in Linguistics at San Jose State University. In addition, I have private tutoring experience in accent modification and accent reduction.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Bryan is very professional at teaching ESL. He is knowledgeable, friendly and patient. He helped me correct my pronunciation. Rather than give me the answer directly, he preferred to encourage me to find out the answer by myself. It would help me understand the new knowledge better, thought the learning pace would be relatively slow. And like other reviews said, Bryan takes teaching ESL as his lif
