About Lorenzo

My teaching style:

I prefer to direct students toward answers instead of giving the student the answer after a single wrong answer. Usually this involves determining where in the thought process the student is stuck and giving a little nudge in the right direction. Afterward, I double check with the student to make sure the concept is understood before moving on. I am very patient and willing to wait until the student understands the concepts, but I also understand that time is money, and won't spend an entire session on one question. I'm very personable and have tutored and mentored students for the better part of the past 6 years.

About me:

I recently concluded a short term experience at San Jose State University lecturing a course in Hypersonic at the Aerospace Engineering department. Currently I am finishing up my PhD in aerospace engineering at Stanford after earning a master my master there. Previous to that, I attended Politecnico di Milano, one of the best Italian engineering schools, as an undergraduate student and earned my bachelors in the same field as my master and my PhD. Given my technical background I have been involved with physics and math since a very young age, though growing up in the old world and specifically in Italy has mad me fall in love with classical studies, which I still enjoy to study in my spare time.

Calculus
I've taught every level of calculus -- from elementary to AP (both AB and BC), to advanced multivariable calculus. Most tutors -- and teachers for that matter -- aren't truly qualified to teach calculus because they don't have the depth of understanding that comes from having a mathematics degree. I help my students acquire real mastery by fitting the specific topics they study into a bigger picture.

Precalculus
Precalculus is a gateway course for more advanced mathematics -- so it's no surprise that many students, even those who have a track record of good grades in math, find themselves overwhelmed by both the depth and breadth of the material. I've tutored the subject since I was in high school.

Trigonometry
I took trigonometry my freshman year in high school and have been teaching and tutoring it ever since. Most high schools these days don't offer a course solely in trigonometry; rather, trig is typically integrated into a pre-calculus, algebra 2, or geometry course.

Differential Equations
I earned an A in differential equations my second year at "Politecnico of Milano" and have tutored the course to engineering majors back in Italy.

Linear Algebra
I earned perfect scores in Linear Algebra classes through out my school years and have TAed multiple times a graduate introductory course in numerical methods for engineering which heavily relies on Linear Algebra.

Physics
Given my background I have extensive knowledge of mechanics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics and aerodynamics.

GRE
I earned the following score on the GRE (800 math, 690 verbal, 3.0 writing).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have taken college courses in ODE and PDE, and TA'ed a numerical ODE/PDE course.

Linear Algebra

I have taken grad and undergrad classes in linear algebra.
I TA'ed 2 years of introduction to numerical method for engineering at Stanford, where linear algebra is of fundamental importance to solve ODE and PDE.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a Bsc in aerospace engineering from Politecni di Milano, and an Msc in aerospace engineering From Stanford University.
I am Currently enrolled as a Ph.D. in the aeronautics & astronautic department at Stanford.
