I have taught for 18 years, in the classroom, and one-on-one. My students have ranged in age from 8 - 80 plus, and come from all over the world: Japan, Mexico, Korea, Russia, France, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, China, and many other countries. At the present time, I lead a Conversation Club for advanced ESL students once a week. I enjoy helping m yEnglish class students with their essays and grammar, and find it very rewarding to work with them on a variety of interests and topics. My Wyzant students also find it
useful to use my expertise when they are writing college application essays.
In addition to teaching, I have worked as a writer/editor for such publications as the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages: "The Language Educator." My articles have focused on global English, language for specific purposes, and the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.
I have also taught social dancing (ballroom and Latin) to thousands of students through Mountain View-Los Altos Adult Education. Learning to dance can be a lot like learning another language!
While my students learn from me, I also learn from them. They help me keep current on graphic
novels, social media, and information technology. Now, if a student finds writing challenging, I
can offer a comic book format as an imaginative alternative! I can draw on a wide range of materials
from my own background -- and what I have learned from the younger generations. I have taught for 18 years, in the classroom, and one-on-one. Ellen and Rvan had a great session reviewing his first 9th grade essay, gave a lot of constructive feedbacks and Evan feels very encouraged. Ellen is very energetic and patient, great progress overall! Thanks.
Ellen was so easy to work with and very understanding of the issues that needed to be addressed. She took the time to review work and give great suggestions! I would highly recommend working with Ellen.
Ellen was very warm and helpful. We got to know each other, and she helped with me with my writing-reflection assignment. I look forward to working with her again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored students in the Quest Scholar program at Stanford and assisted with their essay writing. They were accepted into top-tier schools (Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth, MIT, Sarah Lawrence).
I am currently tutoring two PSAT/SAT high school students, helping them with essay writing. I am also tutoring a GRE student applying for a PhD program in economics.
I have a B.A. in Literature from Bennington College, an M.A. in English from Cal State - San Jose, and a California teaching credential.
I have taught ESL for many years and worked in the classroom and individually with students.
My method includes texts and supporting literature geared to each student's needs and learning abilities. I determine the students' strengths and areas that need work, and adjust my tutoring to meet their abilities and goals.
I have a dance minor from Bennington College,
Vermont (renowned for its dance program started
by Martha Graham) and have continued with many dance forms over the years: ballet, modern, jazz,
ethnic, and ballroom dance.
I started teaching social ballroom and Latin dance at San Jose City College, and for the last 17 years have taught for the Mountain View-Los Altos Adult
Education program. My students in this class are 18 - 90, and they learn to dance all the modern social dances, including waltz, fox trot, swing, tango,
and the Latin dances: mambo, cha-cha, salsa,
rumba. They come into the class shy and worried, and they leave with great confidence after the 6- to
8-week sessions are over.
They also get an introduction to dance music and learn how to identify what dance to do to a particular music and rhythm.
I provide some dance history along with the instruction.
It would be a pleasure to teach Wyzant students who want to get "up and running" quickly so that they can dance in social situations.
