About Audra

I recently completed a doctorate in Mathematics Education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and relocated to Mountain View. I work in designing math tests for end-of-grade exams in grades 3-12, so I am very familiar with content standards and how students are assessed. I have a master's degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from American University in Washington, DC and am a fully credentialed teacher. I taught 8th grade Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry for two years and have over nine years of tutoring experience in all levels of math (including K-12, college, and test preparation). Additionally, I was a mathematics major as an undergraduate which affords me the rich content knowledge needed to explain math conceptually in many different ways. I scored a perfect 800 on the quantitative section of the GRE and co-authored an SAT math preparation book designed for students aiming to get a perfect score on the SAT (on Amazon, search for "SAT Math Prep 800: Challenge Yourself to a Perfect Score").

My tutoring philosophy centers around teaching for conceptual understanding while integrating in problem solving skills and general academic strategies (i.e., organization, self-regulation of understanding, study techniques). In my teaching and tutoring, I use research-based methods that have been proven to increase student achievement. I have worked with many types of learners, including those with disabilities, and will match my tutoring style to the learning style of the student. Whenever possible, I utilize hands-on materials, manipulatives, and real-life settings in order to maximize conceptual understanding. I am passionate about math and love sharing my enthusiasm with students; I believe that a teacher's excitement translates to the student.

I focus on achievement results and have a track record of success. Last year I worked long-term with three students: an 8th grader than improved from an F to a B in Algebra, a 5th grade that went from 56% to 92% on math standardized testing, and a 9th grader that scored a 93% on an Honors Geometry final exam.

When you hire me as a tutor, I do not just work during the time of our sessions. I am also available nights and weekends by phone if you or your student have questions (including providing on-call homework help), and I plan individual lessons and long term unit plans in advance (when appropriate) on my own time. (I only charge for our time together, however.) I believe in collaboration between tutors, teachers, parents, and students and often will email teachers about course content or to give progress updates in addition to verbal consultation with parents before and after each session. I truly want my students to be successful and care about their progress and understanding.

My tutoring schedule is usually fully booked, but - because I am new to the area - this is a rare opportunity to secure my time while I acquire new local students. Please feel free to send me an email with what subject you are interested in and how much tutoring you anticipate needing. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great Tutor

Audra works very well with my daughter, age 14. Audra quickly developed a good working relationship with y daughter. This makes her feel comfortable and also makes it easier for her to ask questions. Audra is very knowledgeable in this subject, Algebra I, and that really helps facilitate the discussion. My daughter is learning and making excellent progress. She and I are both very happy.
