I have tutored for more than a decade across a broad spectrum of ages and subjects. I love biology, chemistry, physics and math, and, as part of helping my students to excel in their academic goals, I've also come to enjoy teaching the strategies and expectations involved in test-taking. As a tutor, my biggest strengths are patience in finding multiple ways to explain topics and enthusiasm for the wonder of science and math. I find it exhilarating to watch students' eyes light up as they finally grasp difficult concepts, and I work hard to make it as fun for them as it is for me. There are many aspects of my history that make me well-suited to tutoring, but fundamentally, the most important point is how fascinating I find science and math. Being able to share the wonder of understanding how the world around us is put together, how the universe works, is absolutely my favorite part of tutoring.

My relevant academic history includes: A.S. in Biology from DeAnza Community College, B.S. in Molecular Biology, minor in Chemistry from San Jose State University, M.S. in Neuroscience from Stanford University, and an in-progress PhD in Neuroscience from Stanford University. My relevant work history includes: both individual and group tutoring through DeAnza and San Jose State, teaching discussion sections for both labs and lectures at DeAnza and San Jose State, and starting my own tutoring business over 9 years ago.

My excellence as a math tutor stems from an enormous range of experience. I started tutoring through the DeAnza Math and Science Tutoring Center by leading group tutoring sessions for specific classes, but I later added drop-in tutoring to my repertoire. As a tutor called upon to help with any topic from elementary math to differential equations, my ability to recall and discuss an incredible range of material was expanded immensely. Not only that, but I also had a chance, through interacting with such a large variety of students, to begin assessing common points of difficulty. It's so helpful to know where the stumbling blocks often appear in material for my own preparation and also to help students know that they aren't the only ones struggling with a particular topic. I also struggled to really master math until I was nearly halfway through calculus, and I spent huge amounts of time receiving tutoring and asking for many different explanations before grasping the material. I feel that gives me a uniquely empathetic perspective to share with students who are struggling to learn.

My enthusiasm for science is limitless! At the most basic level, I love to understand how the universe works, and I've found nearly every branch of science to be fascinating. In fact, I've actually struggled to decide which arena to pursue with the various stages of my educational career as, each time I begin a new degree, I have a new opportunity to expand my field of expertise. Biology and chemistry are the routes I've chased most assiduously, but I also love basic physics, earth science, and planetary science. In addition to my enjoyment of science topics, I also have a great deal of hands-on tutoring experience in group and individual settings, lab and lecture topics, as well as leading adjunct discussion sections through academic institutions.

I want to be very clear that inclusivity of everyone is incredibly important to me. I recognize that many people are afforded fewer opportunities for help based on race, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental ability, as well as many other axes of oppression. I know that many of these factors contribute to students' readiness to learn as they navigate the additional labor required by our society, and I'm very willing and able to tailor my style and teaching tactics to best suit the needs of each individual. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my teaching philosophy, expertise, or availability. I'm happy to communicate with everyone!

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I've tutored in math topics of all varieties for almost 10 years, both for individuals and small groups. I have often worked with students learning elementary math, and because it's so fundamental to doing well in more advanced classes, I often review these skills with other students, as well. It's often helpful for students to know how they'll use the knowledge they're currently acquiring, and I find that to be particularly helpful in teaching math. My early experience was with college students, and I later expanded to work with middle- and high-school students. I'm very well-versed in which areas tend to be stumbling blocks, and I have many techniques to help students overcome difficult material. I also worked in a tutoring center with drop-in hours, which was particularly helpful in both identifying problem areas and finding multiple ways to explain ideas.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I've tutored algebra 1 for almost 10 years, both for individuals and small groups. My early experience was with college students, and I later expanded to work with middle- and high-school students. I'm very well-versed in which areas tend to be stumbling blocks, and I have many techniques to help students overcome difficult material. In addition to algebra topics, I have also tutored pre-algebra and trigonometry (as well as more difficult math classes). Because of this, I can help students use the tools and skills they've already built, as well as point out particularly useful components for classes they will take in the future. It's often helpful for students to know how they'll use the knowledge they're currently acquiring, and I find that to be particularly helpful in teaching math.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I've tutored algebra for almost 10 years, both for individuals and small groups. My early experience was with college students, and I later expanded to work with middle- and high-school students. I'm very well-versed in which areas tend to be stumbling blocks, and I have many techniques to help students overcome difficult material. In addition to algebra topics, I have also tutored elementary math and pre-calculus (as well as more advanced math classes). Because of this, I can help students use the tools and skills they've already built, as well as pointing out particularly useful components for classes they will take in the future. Biology,

Biology

I have 3 degrees, all in biology, the most recent of which is my M.S. in Neuroscience from Stanford. Additionally, I was a TA in multiple biology courses and have 7+ years of experience in academic research labs where my duties included training new lab members. Beyond the education and hands-on applications in biology, I have also tutored the subject for more than a decade. In that time, I've helped students at every stage from middle school to upper division graduate coursework, and I have a depth and breadth of knowledge that makes tutoring the subject a great deal of fun.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

My grades in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry were outstanding (both lecture and lab, where offered). I have done both group and individual tutoring for all of the above-mentioned classes at the high school and college level, as well as teaching supplemental instruction sections at the college level. Additionally, in two academic research labs, I've utilized biochemical assays, so I have hands-on experience with problem solving in ways that are, perhaps, less traditional within a classroom setting. Given my extensive tutoring experience, I'm well aware of common pitfalls and knowledge gaps in these topics and have devised many examples and explanations to help students master areas of difficulty. I deeply enjoy helping students understand the fundamentals of chemistry in order to apply them more broadly.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I've tutored in pre-algebra for almost 10 years, both for individuals and small groups. Shubhra, 7 lessons with Theresa

Very knowledgeable and patient with my 12 yo.

Theresa taught Algebra-2 to my daughter. She taught her the concepts that my daughter was weak in, and then gave her problems to make sure she understood. My daughter loves her and she is a really good tutor. Thank you, Theresa.

Vivek, 3 lessons with Theresa
