Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Holly’s main instrument is piano, but her two degrees are in music theory and composition. Holly picked up percussion as a secondary instrument to better understand writing for it. In the process of learning to write in all styles, she has composed for orchestra, concert band, choirs, chamber ensembles, rock and roll bands, musical theater, rap and soloists. She is a published composer and enjoys performing regularly and introducing new songs to her audiences. She has studied composition with Ron Caviani, Stan Beckler, Dr. Laurence Ebert, Allan Strange, film composer Dan Wyman and Charlie Peacock.

Music History

Holly has studied music history at three universities. Besides music history of Western Civilization, she has studied musical theater, gamelan, jazz, opera, contemporary music including the music of John Cage, 12 tone music and choral microtones. From the classical to rock and roll, Holly has a balanced background which makes her a strong and versatile teacher.

Songwriting

Holly originally started with the goal of being a classical concert artist. Along the way, she discovered she could write music. While there are many great pianists, there are few who can write music well. Her strong background in music theory and composition led her to discovering while writing her Master’s thesis, she had a knack for writing popular music. Having the tools to write well, inspiration and understanding that a good song has space in it for each individual to bring their own experiences to it has helped her write music that stays with the listener. Holly enjoys teaching others the tools to bring their creativity to life in songwriting.
