I believe in interactive tutoring sessions. I have been teaching and tutoring English, Psychology and foreign languages since 1995. My greatest success with my tutees has come about through listening and appreciating their input and the integrity of their ideas.
My years as an undergraduate and graduate student at UC Berkeley and UC Davis stressed the Socratic method of teaching. That is, the instructor and the student constructively argued his or her points of view, while listening, appreciating, absorbing, and remaining open-minded to adversarial ideas. This is the method I choose for tutoring my students.
I have also lectured in seminars in English and American Literature at the University of Nevada, Reno. With a group of fewer than ten students, I always encouraged students to express their ideas, and emphasized the importance of originality in thinking as well as accuracy and logic in research methods.

We were in the process of determining if Joyce would be a good fit for my daughter so we hadn't hired her yet. Nonetheless, I got charged for a "get to know" phone interview even though Joyce promised me there would be no charge. I even stopped her during our conversation and she ensured me for the second time that there would be no fee. I was very disappointed that she did not follow through with her word because the next thing I knew, she had charged me for a 45 minute tutoring session that I did not approve of. We decided she was not a good fit, and the surprise charge reinforced our decision to find another tutor.

The above response was a misinterpretation by the student's Mother. I specifically told the parent - not once, not twice, but 3 times - that our initial meeting would be a NO charge IF the student and I were to discuss non-academic subjects, such as her favorite music, sports, movies, clothes, etc. But those discussions NEVER occurred. Instead, I attempted to teach the student elements of Literature: character analysis, theme, plot, figurative language, and the student stated she took notes on this purely ACADEMIC lesson. After 45 minutes, the parent wanted to end the session, as her daughter had totally lost interest, and I can only assume that, since the parent was privy to the entire lesson, she obviously knew that it was purely academic, not sports, not music,etc., and the parent did not wish to pay for the ACADEMIC lesson. We needed an experienced SAT tutor to prep my daughter for SAT critical reading and essay writing in 4 weeks. My daughter took 3 hours of tutoring from Joyce and stopped. We felt she had a great English language teaching experience but not much of SAT prep tutoring experience.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have concentrated on teaching Western Literature - Poetry, Drama, and Prose - since 1995.
I also prepare my students with an emphasis on writing, reading comprehension, and critical analysis skill-building.
In addition, analysis and understanding of modern British Poetry is a subject upon which I place a great deal of emphasis and importance. Although this might appear difficult, I can assure you that we all have fun learning about Literature!
