About Brian

I attended Pepperdine University, finishing in the top ten of my graduating class with a 3.991 GPA. I've been tutoring graduate and university students for two years at Pepperdine's Writing Center, working on everything from masters degree theses, to law school briefs, to the papers of ESL students. I also tutor high school and middle school students, specializing in writing and grammar. I've worked as a copy editor for a student publication, called Global Tides, and have had my own work published. I will be attending the University of Chicago law school in the fall.
Although I quickly become personally invested in seeing struggling students succeed in a class, I enjoy seeing a student's skills improve. In other words, I'm happiest when my tutees don't need my help anymore.

I have vast experience working with ESL students. Among my fellow tutors, I have a reputation as a grammar nazi, and have worked with students on grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and writing in general.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I'm known in Pepperdine's English department for being a ruthless editor. I've also worked as an Associate Editor for the Global Tides Journal, making, among other suggestions, grammatical critiques of submitted works. Beyond my work as an Associate Editor for Global Tides and a Tutor for Pepperdine's Writing Center, I have tutored high school and elementary school students on writing and grammar.

LSAT

I have studied the LSAT extensively, using the PowerScore methodology. I averaged above 170 on practice tests and received a 170 as my official score that got me into the University of Chicago, one of the top 5 law schools in the nation. I was first in my Logic class at Pepperdine University, and am familiar with the complex modal logic needed more and more on the LSAT Logical Reasoning and Logic Games sections.

Proofreading

In my over two years of experience as a Writing Center Tutor, I have helped dozens, if not hundreds, of students to proofread their papers, many of which received stellar reviews from professors. I've also worked as an Associate Editor for an academic journal called Global Tides; in this capacity, not only did I recommend student papers for publication, but I also proofread every work that was published by the Humanities division of the journal.

Vocabulary

I've worked as a private tutor, aiding high school students in memorizing vocabulary lists. In my work for the Pepperdine Writing Center, I have helped ESL students, Masters degree candidates, and other top students to find the most apt words for the context of their papers.

Writing

I've tutored in the Pepperdine Writing Center for over two years, giving feedback on everything from English 101 papers for ESL students, to doctoral theses, and law school briefs. I've peer-reviewed dozen of college essays and have helped high-school and elementary school students with writing. My own writing has been published in the GlobalTides Journal.
