About James

My experience as an educator spans a thirteen year period. I began tutoring as a student at Moorpark College in 2001. After graduating as the Outstanding Philosophy student of the Year, I transferred to USC, where I was the acting president of the Philosophy club during my senior year. Throughout my time there, I worked as a tutor for Student Athlete Academic Services, a division of the USC Department of Education. After receiving my Bachelor's degree, I pursued an M.A. in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis from the University of Essex in the UK, which was granted to me with merit in December of 2006. Since then, I've worked for Las Virgenes Unified schools as a substitute teacher. As of October 22, 2014, I am registered as a Patent Agent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, subsequent to having passed the Patent Registration Exam. Admission to the same was achieved under Category B, Option 2, with equivalency granted for a Biological Sciences degree. In addition to tutoring, I offer services in college admissions counseling, as well as test preparation and planning for both the LSAT and the Patent Registration Examination.

I am happy to answer any and all questions you might have about me, my background and my services. Thanks for taking the time, and I do hope to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

The fundamental subject that transitions from arithmetic to perhaps the whole of advanced mathematics, the basic principles of algebra are fun to learn and even easier than you might think. Especially when you have a competent tutor such as myself by your side.

Algebra 2

As the entry-point to advanced mathematics, I understand intimately how much of a challenge Algebra II can be for many students. Having taught it extensively, I am prepared to anticipate common mistakes in understanding that students make in this subject.

With a wealth of biology coursework under my belt, I feel particularly prepared to tutor Anatomy. Beyond that, the three personal trainer certifications I've achieved in my life ensure an advanced knowledge. Finally, the same certifications guarantee competence in advanced topics such as kinesiology.

The study of man. With a solid background in the life and human sciences, I am confident I can lend you the sort of thinking abilities necessary to understand your coursework, whether your course is of a biological or a cultural bent.

I achieved a high score on the ASVAB at an Army recruitment center. It was in the 90's. Also, I have worked intensively with veterans and military candidates, so I am well disposed to helping this kind of person.

What's more fascinating a thing on this planet than the phenomenon of life? From the tiniest virii, to the study of macro-organisms, evolutionary theory, cladistics, all the way to biological psychology and the philosophy of biology, I'm ready to help you out. I'm confident you will find few tutors on this site who have as great a breadth of knowledge with regard to this stimulating field as myself.

Botany was covered in all of the Biology coursework I've taken over the years.
These courses include Introductory Biology, Marine Biology, as well as General Biology I and II. The most extensive coverage of the subject, however, was conveyed in General Biology II.

I completed High School Chemistry and the General Chemistry sequence (I&II) at the College Level. I've also completed a CSET Multiple Subject Area II Credential, which qualifies me as a Math and Science educator within the State of California.

As a student of a certain breadth of reading in ancient Greek philosophy, along with most of Shakespeare's major plays, and having read the work of many other minor philosophers, poets, novelist and playwrights within what many would regard as the definitive western Canon, I am confident in my ability in helping you to come to a solid understanding of most any text, be it modern or ancient.

College Counseling

From the moment a secondary school student begins to think about attending College, the future becomes of primary interest. Student's motivations for seeking entrance to college are unique and varied, but in our time, the goal in mind centers around building a future of some sort for one's self.

As a graduate of two leading academic institutions, I am intimately familiar with the excitement and confusion that can occupy a College hopeful. Applying to college can be a vexing experience, a time accompanied by a great deal of anxiety, as all times preceding momentous decisions are. With my graduate degree in the social and behavioral sciences, you can rest assured that I will be sensitive to any difficulties you might be encountering, and equally attentive to your needs and desires as a unique, human individual.

I am knowledgeable in the "what it takes" for literally hundreds of different career fields, from the technical and scientific to the literary and humane. I am confident that I can provide you with counseling that makes a critical difference, both as far as the application process is concerned and beyond. Even if you do not know specifically what you want out of college, but have the idea of attending in mind, I would love to speak with you, to help you to ascertain your true interests and capabilities.

The services I offer are as efficient as they are effective. In a minimal amount of time, I can help you to formulate a reasonable idea of what it will take to gain acceptance to the program you've dreamed about, and I am confident in my ability to assist you in putting together an action plan on the basis of these results. Lastly, I wish to emphasize that my greatest strength as an admissions counselor lies in my ability to help you present yourself as an attractive candidate. To this end, I offer special discount rates on proofreading and brainstorming for personal admissions essays. Though my intention is to offer this as part of an introductory offer to more comprehensive services, I am happy to have you use it as a trial. If nothing else, let me help you find your unique voice, and deliver a message that will make you stand out above the rest.

As a credentialed multiple-subject teacher, my command of English grammar, spelling and vocabulary is extensive enough to help advanced students.

As of today, I possess a valid NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist certificate, as well as an ERPT Level I certificate. I am also CPR, AED and First Aid certified.

Shakespeare got you confused? Having a time of getting to the bottom of a really tough poem, novel, or short story? In addition to my background in philosophy and psychoanalysis, I have spent a great deal of time and effort both writing creative non-fiction and poetry, as well as studying the significance of literature from within the context of critical and literary theory. If it's a meaning or a reading that you're after, I can help you come to it.

I received a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Southern California, and an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Essex. Throughout the course of my undergraduate education, I took three different logic courses, culminating in advanced symbolic logic. I am more inclined to tutor those who are taking courses in elementary or introductory formal logic than the more advanced topics.

Martial Arts

I have a number of years of experience as a competitive fighter and trainer. I've taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling for Pepperdine University and Bas Rutten's Elite MMA Gym, respectively. I've also studied and practiced Western Boxing, Muay Thai, American Kickboxing and Hawaiian Kempo, and have well over two-hundred competitive bouts of wrestling and grappling matches under me belt. I am a blue belt of four stripes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under 3X world Champion Black Belt Rodrigo Carvhalo.

My foremost and favorite matter of study. My interests within this field have spanned the gamut of things, from the theory of knowledge, to ancient Greek philosophy, to contemporary analytic meta-ethics, all the way to 20th Century European philosophy, to include phenomenology, existentialism, and psychoanalysis. With a number of praises and distinctions having been conferred upon me by scholars of note, I am confident that there are few experts in this subject matter on WyzAnt who can offer you the kind of help as a philosophy tutor that I can.

If you're in need of some serious, closely attentive proofreading services for anything you've written, my standard tutoring rates apply. The system is easy enough: get your billing information on file with WyzAnt, contact me, send me your paper, and I'll proofread it with my handy QuickBooks timer file running in the background. From there, I send you back your document with suggestions and edits made with the "TRACK CHANGES" feature of MS-Word, and you are free to accept, reject or modify any of the input I have to offer. This process can be repeated as many times for a single piece of writing as you'd like. At the end of the process, you can count on having a much improved piece of work, whether it is something you'd like to turn in, publish, or simply present to your friends at a reading. Standard tutoring hourly rate applies.

My expertise in this field focuses on its historical roots more than its contemporary state. However, besides philosophy, this is the subject matter where I excel the most, in terms of concepts and a nuanced ability to convey their significance. From the transference to neurosis to the repetition compulsion, I can help you to not only succeed as a psychology student, but to understand the speculative developments within the history of science that provide the foundation for the very ideas you're grappling with.

As a youth, religious studies were a mandatory part of my education, and continue to be a source of deep intellectual interest to this day.

Spanish is my strongest foreign language. I've taken four years of classroom Spanish, and I've used it frequently over the years in work and while on vacation. I am confident in my ability to teach it through Spanish II.

Writing is a passion of mine. I have composed perhaps a litany of poetry, creative non-fiction, and short stories over the past ten years. Beyond creative writing, I excel at the technical side of things as well: I have helped prepare patent documents, instruction manuals, and codified, written procedures at a number of the jobs I've had over the years. I can help you to bring a a sense of order and orderliness, of clarity of meaning and economy of expression, and of course, a unique voice to your own writing.
