I'm a licensed teacher for both English and Special Education with over ten years of experience. I've worked for one of the best school districts in the country as a Literacy Coach, and I've recently moved to Monterey. When I work with students, I try to identify why the child is struggling: is it organization, memory, study skills, learning styles, a learning disability, or other reason. Then using that information, I create customized lessons and materials to help each child find success within that area. My goal isn't to just help the child with the content, but to learn skills and strategies to become a more effective learner. This is true for elementary through college; I've worked with all the above.
I prefer to work online, so I can be available more frequently, but I'm also available to meet face-to-face. I currently work at a high school and at CSUMB as a college lecturer, so I'm pretty busy. However, I have a very respectable reputation from hundreds of students over the years, and I'm looking forward to developing new opportunities through tutoring services.
Because I have a very structured approach with direct instruction and use the learning style that meets each student's needs, I've had excellent success. In fact, I've had 98% of my students pass their state-mandated tests and college placement exams in both reading and writing. For writing, I use a backwards approach. I teach organization first and then structure, and finally details. It helps students not feel so overwhelmed with the idea of a blank sheet of paper. For reading, I help students decode words, identify meanings through sentence structures and clues, increase their fluency, and improve their comprehension.

On a personal note, I've traveled most of Europe and love to explore new cultures. In fact, my profile image is from Amsterdam. If you have any questions, I'm here to help. If I don't know the answer, I'll be honest and find the answer. I'm a licensed teacher for both English and Special Education with over ten years of experience. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's degree in communications and have taught public speaking at both the high school and college environments. I'm currently teaching communications courses at CSUMB and have taught them at Kaplan and DeVry. In fact, I've taken my high school students to state competitions due to winning local, district, and regional competitions within various areas of public speaking and debate.
