About Katie

Hello!

My name is Katie, and I have been tutoring for about eight years now. I graduated from college in 2012, and I have my bachelor's degree in linguistics and American Sign Language. I currently tutor children and adults in ESL and children in English/Language Arts as well as reading comprehension and writing.

My style of tutoring starts with identifying the obstacles. I not only talk to the student (or their parents) about what obstacles they are facing, but I take the time to explore why this is causing a problem as it might not be so obvious. I get my students thinking about not only what they are doing but why they are doing it. The use of open-ended questions gets the student thinking about all of this. We have to move above and beyond yes or no answers in order to learn and retain the information.

I have worked with students of all ages, and I am very patient. I do not focus on criticism, I focus on positive reinforcement along with constructive feedback and techniques and strategies to overcome these obstacles and start performing better in the classroom, on the exam, etc.

I look forward to working with you in the future!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My degree in Linguistics required me to take classes in morphology, semantics, reading, writing, phonology and prosody. I currently teach ESL as well.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with many languages and have studied language patterns in college along with annotating language data and learning the structure of multiple languages. This has allowed me to better teach how to go from one language structure to another.

Grammar

I have taken numerous syntax and semantics courses at the college level.

Phonics

I have my B.A. in Linguistics. This consisted of many courses in phonetics and phonology.

Proofreading

I proofread and edit for the writing center in college. I also proofread and edit publications, emails, articles at the graduate level for the medical school in my town.

Reading

I have tutored reading and writing at all age levels and to speakers of many different languages. I have also taken several college level writing classes with an average grade of an A.

Sign Language

I minored in ASL in college. I am also in an Interpreter Training Program currently, continuing my study in the language.

Softball

I have played travel softball all through high school as a pitcher and an outfielder. I also played college softball at the University of Rochester from 2008-2012 as the starting center fielder and a slap-hitter.

Spelling

I pride myself in perfect spelling. Part of my proofreading and editing involves spell checking and correcting words. I also have taught and tutored children that are learning spelling in school.

Writing

I have taken a lot of writing classes at the college level and I enjoy writing on my own time as well. I believe in structured writing that will allow the reader to understand the message in a meaningful way.
