About John

My journey as a self taught artist began with the revelation that I wasn't content with my job as a bank clerk. Not only was my job unfulfilling, I felt that my potential talents were being wasted. Fast forward 6 years and I've not only worked for clients such as Pinshape and Volvo, I'm currently working full time at my dream job as a 3D artist. I go into work every morning feeling happy and gracious for my position, and I still spend every night learning new skills. And I hope to pass down my knowledge to students who aren't afraid of honest critiques and hard work.

I've used Maya for the past 6 years for every task imaginable, and even figured out how to keep Maya 2017's constant crashing to a minimum. The UI in Maya is a lot better now, but what I've learned is that many of its rigging functions can be used for animation, and that there's even some hidden functionality that most people don't know about.

If you're ready to become a professional, hit me up. I guarantee your resulting portfolio will look phenomenal.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Architecture

I have undergone a full year of training in the architecture industry, specifically for curtain wall and window wall design and installation. I help convert Rhino and Revit models into the Autodesk Maya environment so that I can render realistic animations. I'm currently working on buildings such as the new Case Western Reserve University building in Cleveland, OH.

Autodesk Maya

My primary background is product renders and commercials. I use Autodesk Maya 2016 and 2017 on a daily basis and have a strong understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and what causes them to crash. If a student needs help with modeling, lighting, texturing or rendering, I will be able to guide them quickly and effectively.

Great tutor able to adjust quickly to my particular needs

John is very knowledgeable and good at explaining how to do something, but more importantly for my learning style, he can also tell you why! He had lots of tips and tricks that only someone with actively involved in the particular software would know.
