About Jill

Hello, my name is Jill. My love of reading and writing goes back to when I started school many years ago. I liked to read and sometimes pretended to be the characters in the books. Using my imagination, I traveled to where they lived and became involved in the action. Now as a grandmother of three elementary school children, I am getting to experience their first involvement in learning to read and find the adventure that awaits them in the pages. I love to spend time with them reading and exploring new stories and concepts. Patience and patience are two of my best qualities. I also believe structure, discipline, repetition, and reward are just as important and are a necessary part of the learning process.

I have been tutoring elementary age students for about two years. I am currently assisting in a Kindergarten class in learning blends, word families, and sight words. The majority of this class are English Language Learners. My approach to tutoring depends on the age of the student and the specific needs of the student. First, I am available to consult with the parents and the student's teacher to target instruction for areas of challenge. Secondly, together we assess what areas need strengthening. Depending if it is comprehension, oral fluency, word recognition, vocabulary or writing; a plan is put in place to work on deficiencies. The materials used are often what is supplied by the school. I also support the workshop approach and allow for students to select materials that interest them. This is done in addition to completing assigned lessons. If there are pictures in the book, I have the student preview the pictures in the chapter. A visual and even a non visual learner will get an idea of what the chapter is about. Having this knowledge before reading allows for a better understanding of what they are reading and gives me a focal point of reference. I also have the student read silently for a few minutes and then ask questions for comprehension. My belief is creating an environment in which the student wants to learn. I have seen boys enjoy reading books about race cars and girls reading about princesses to get them interested in the process.

I use some of Bloom's taxonomy theories to monitor progress and measure success. I constantly check for the student to exhibit memory of learned materials by recalling facts, terms and basic concepts. This demonstrates knowledge of the subject. Testing comprehension is having the student demonstrate understanding of facts and ideas by asking questions. It is important to check the students application of acquired knowledge. They will need to take what they have learned and apply the knowledge to a new situation. Although these are guidelines for measuring progress, I am flexible to the needs of the student. If progress is not being seen by the parents, or teacher, I am willing to alter and adjust my approach. My goal is for the success of your student.

I have a degree in English and majored in Literature. I have read everything from the Classics to all the Harry Potter books which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was trained to teach in secondary education and although a different career presented itself and I did not teach school, I have always taught in some way. I have written and taught corporate training programs, and have tutored ESL classes to adults. The reward of seeing a student understand, or a student improve in grammar, or increase in fluency is very satisfying. I have the desire and experience to help your child improve their reading and writing skills and open the window to the world adventures.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I worked in Retail Management for over 30 years and during that time I had to prepare and present many speaking presentations. Many of the presentations were training sessions for new hires into the company. I have used note cards, slides, and PowerPoint to enhance the presentation.

Most recently, I served on the Board of Directors for a Real Estate Association and had to do public speaking to Realtors on behalf of the Association.

Knowing the subject matter is crucial to a strong presentation and preparing without memorizing the material is key.
Developing confidence through practice is also important. Speaking in the appropriate cadence and tone is necessary to keep the interest of the audience. This is learned by practice and by recording the presentation so the student can hear themselves speak. This allows for them to see what the audience sees.
