Having been born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I was fortunate to grow up speaking and writing in French. I attended French schools all of my life which means I have more than just a few years of French learning but my whole education was immersed in French only. Not only can I say I speak French but lived in a French cultural environment. I spoke English too because of my father being British which means that I learned how to translate back and forth between the two languages (that was very helpful at my jobs in Montreal). Once in College, I minored in French while majoring in the Arts and Graphic Design. The minor consisted of reading and studying about all the great writers such as Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Albert Camus, Beaudelaire, etc.
While working in Montreal, I was the proofreader for French and English for all the graphic design brochures my colleagues and I designed and printed. Therefore, my French is considered university level.
I have tutored one to one in Montreal as well as in Los Angeles. I have a passion tutoring others the French language for I enjoy seeing them speaking my mother tongue. My focus is on practical application, that is, the student will learn conversation French as opposed to only vocabulary and grammatical rules. He or she will also learn French expressions used by the French. I offer hands-on practical exercises for day to day conversations in French as well as learning writing skills. I try to make learning a language challenging but fun at the same time.
I also need to mention here that I also tutor computer software courses on the Mac such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign including Acrobat. I have a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and have taught one to one courses to students at their home. Preferably, the student should have a Mac of their own, but I do have a laptop in case the need arises.
Also, having earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, I can also tutor drawing classes in charcoal, pencil, and garandache (water color pencils). Having never used InDesign, and despite the session being short due to the volume of teaching that we went through, I already feel like I have learnt the crucial basics.
Nicole was very patient in trying to understand my questioning (I certainly don't know all the right terminology), and in her subsequent explanations. Once I have had time to practice and do some 'trial by error', I shall certainly call on her again for further teaching to advance my skills.
Nicole is very knowledgeable and has helped my daughter get an A in her French Class. Nicole is very reliable. My daughter was in French 2 and was getting a B- and Nichole helped her get an A. Thank you.
Thank you Cynthia for your feedback! I appreciate it!
I will have to say I am very pleased with her teaching methods. She is easy to follow and spends her time with me when I'm not able to follow.I would recommend her to other students with no hesitation
Nicole was a great teacher while I'm learning InDesign. She is very patient and takes the time to go through each steps thoroughly. I will definitely continue working with Nicole!
She was smart and fun and energetic and very patient. I would definitely recommend her to other students and I plan on using her again myself.
My college-age son did not speak any French when he started his sessions with Nicole, and he learned a lot in just a few weeks with her. My son's main motivation for studying French was that his planned graduate programs expect him to acquire a working knowledge of French over time. We considered enrolling my son in a French class, but the dates of various classes locally and elsewhere did not work with his schedule, so individual tutoring seemed better. And allowed my son to move at his own pace. Sessions were productive and covered a lot of ground, including reading, writing, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, and more. I was impressed that when my son's textbook went temporarily missing for one session, Nicole was still able to have a very useful two hour session without the book. I believe my son's French is off to a great start thanks to Nicole. He seemed to enjoy the sessions and seemed to enjoy speaking a bit of French with me between sessions as well. An extra benefit was that Nicole is from Montreal, and my son will soon be traveling to Montreal. She, at his request, filled him in on a few quirks of French as spoken in Montreal, although they spent the vast majority of their time on French as spoken in France.
My daughter had Nicole since the beginning of the summer just to get prepared for her 9th grade French 1. She's easy going and very friendly, on time and patient, organized, and always prepared. Moves quickly but never goes on without making sure all material is understood! Will definitely keep having her through the school year!
This is our first lesson with Nicole, my son was very happy with the class, he almost decided to drop the French class at school before met with Nicole, and now he rebuilt confidence to continue to study French, thank you Nicole!
Thorough, informative, capable, prompt, friendly, accessible, professional - ALL of the properties you want in a tutor. I look forward to my next session. Nicole is great.
Nicole P. is great. She is always punctual and friendly. Her class is fun and my kid learns fast. We enjoy her teaching.
Nicole is very patient and professional. She is great with my children's french lessons, and does a wonderful job of preparing for class. We are very satisfied with her.
I would like to say that Nicole is both a very patient and well prepared French tutor. The combination of these two factors helped my first meeting with her go well. I am looking forward to having another French session with Nicole soon. Thanks Nicole.
Nicole took the time to research where our son stood in his French studies so that she could prepare before meeting with him. He thus found her well-organized, friendly and making good use of time. Having help from a native speaker really helps! We would highly recommend her.
This was my daughter's first session with Nicole. Nicole took the time to review her prior class work (at Nicole's request, we sent it to her ahead of time) and was prepared to help her with specific instances of what she was doing wrong. She was easy to follow, explained things well and used humor. My daughter thought the 90 minute session was very helpful and went by quickly.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a professional graphic designer, I work most of my time in InDesign for designing brochures, magazines, book covers and other layouts. I am advanced in InDesign and have been using this software since it first came out. I have mastered it and most of my work is done in this program.
I have 16 years of experience as a graphic designer, which means that I have worked for as many years using Photoshop to manipulate images, create montages of images for projects such as posters, and a lot of retouching of photos in order to improve people's complexions, smiles, and hair for brochures, catalogs, magazines, and posters. Photoshop is the best software for retouching and enhancing photos that need to stand out. My experience also extends to salvaging and retouching photos that have aged, or have been damaged or if they have been over exposed or under exposed. I have also used Photoshop for creating the most fun and unusual images that one can imagine that you wouldn't be able to photograph in real life. I would love to be able to share all my expertise with this fun and useful software.
I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts which means I draw in charcoal, pencil, watercolor pencils. My style is realistic and sometimes very detailed. I have furthered my studies by taking extra drawing classes at UCLA and had some of my work exposed at the UCLA website for artists.
I am a French speaking native of Montreal. I have lived most of my life in a French speaking environment, not just taking courses in French as many tutors only had the opportunity to do. This means I know not only the vocabulary and grammar but also well known expressions and the culture itself, music, food etc. I have also studied in a French University in Montreal which means I had to pass the national exam for French which is quite tough in order to get my degree. My minor was in French literature. My method of tutoring would be a hands-on approach with practical exercises and having fun at the same time. I have experience tutoring children from ages 6 to 18 as well as tutoring adults who have never learned French to those who want to brush up on their French. Therefore, I hope you will consider me as your tutor.
I am certified to teach the use of the MacIntosh computer since I am a graphic designer and work solely with the Mac. I have been using a Mac for over 15 years for my work and have been using most of the software that is meant to work on a Mac as well as the iLife programs that initially come with the Mac.
Besides having studied graphic design and having a bachelor's degree in that field, I also have a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Waterloo University in Ontario, Canada. This degree certifies that I have acquired this degree by studying and doing painting, drawing and sculpture.
