About Bruce

Greetings. I like helping people succeed at what they do, and tutoring is a way of helping them achieve their goals. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from California State University, Fresno and a second Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I started tutoring as a student at Santa Barbara City College where I was employed as a tutor by the Chemistry Department. Later I began tutoring employees at a local hospital in Stockton. The academic areas I focus on are mathematics (primarily algebra), English, grammar and writing. I also assist people with preparing grant proposals.

Basic Math (All Ages) Basic math skills are important for success in our society. It is also a subject that is very challenging for many people; however, with a bit of practice, it’s an area where almost anyone can be successful. I can help you or your children develop these skills and the confidence to pursue more advanced coursework.

Algebra (Middle School-Adult) Algebra is one of my favorite areas to tutor. Mastery of the subject will give you the confidence to attack problems of moderate complexity and increase your marketability as an employee. I can help you with both algebra 1 and algebra 2, and I can show you how to use algebra to solve practical problems.

General Science (Grammar School- High School) General Science courses typically draw from Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography and Ecology. The classes are fun because of the diversity of the subject matter, and they can help students decide which scientific disciplines (if any) hold the most interest for them. California, especially in cities like Modesto, is rich in natural laboratories to study the world around us.

Writing and Grammar (Middle School – Adult) Writing is a key tool in communication, and I can teach you proper grammar and punctuation. Developing grammar skills are mostly a matter of practice and utilizing a number of basic rules. Making your topic come alive is more dependent on your vocabulary and your ability to describe the world around you. This latter part is the fun part for most people. Along with mathematics skills, effective writing can strongly influence your career trajectory and help you to achieve your objectives.

Proposal Writing (Grant Proposals) I’ve written dozens of successful proposals and obtained over $5,000,000 in grants. I can help you develop your own proposals and guide you through the process with various types of funding organizations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Prealgebra

I have BAs in Biology and Chemistry and have a strong background in Mathematics. I have tutored Mathematics quite a bit, and I focus on developing the student's problem solving ability so that they can complete their homework assignments and perform better on tests. Most kids need someone to show them which concepts are really important and which ones are just exercises.

I've written dozens of successful proposals and obtained over $5,000,000 in grants. I can help you develop your own proposals and guide you through the process with various types of funding organizations. (Grant Proposals)
