I have been tutoring one-on-one for over 50 years. After teaching in public schools, I decided I preferred the "eyeball to eyeball" contact of private lessons which produced better understanding of the subject matter and faster positive results.
My favorite student age is second grade. For remedial students there is a greater chance of catching up if there is early intervention with extra help. I ask that my students come twice a week. They will have vocabulary homework and sometimes extra reading. I give lots of encouragement and sticker rewards. My students usually achieve grade level within a year.
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy for missed lessons, but I do offer make-up sessions.
I hold a current CA Elementary Teaching Credential and a City of Modesto business license. I am a Sunday School teacher (1st and 2nd grade) and a professional author. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Christian. I have completed twelve years of Bible Study Fellowship, six of those as a discussion leader. I have authored twenty-six Bible story books (one 12 book series for 7-8 year-olds, plus a Christmas and an Easter book; one five book series for 10-14 year-olds, plus another Easter book; and six books for young adults). I am an enthusiastic Bible student.
I hold a current Clear General Elementary Teaching Credential. I have tutored elementary students for over 50 years in reading, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, writing, grammar, history, science, and math up to Algebra. I have helped with assigned homework and projects.
I have tutored Reading and Vocabulary, both of which employ phonics, for over 50 years. I use both the Hay-Wingo Reading with Phonics (Lippincott) and A Handbook for Reading (A Beka Book Reading Program).
I took additional training in Phonics at the Modesto Homeschooling Convention where I received instruction in Phonic Pathways, a Reading Manual for Beginning and Remedial Readers by Delores G. Hiskes (Dorbooks).
I have also used the 1st and 2nd grade workbooks of Spectrum Phonics (McGraw-Hill). Years ago I worked with the A.D.D. (Auditory Discrimination in Depth) program by Lindamood (Teaching Resources).
I am a published author. I belong to two writer's critique groups where proofreading is what we do to help each other strengthen our writing.
I am a published author of over twenty-five books, fifteen of which are traditionally published. The rest are self-published eBooks, both children's and adult. I have tutored reading, writing and spelling for 50 years.
