About Ted

Hi!

While I worked on a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling at Utah State University (2005-2008), I taught part-time as a substitute teacher for Modesto City and Stanislaus County schools. I attended CSU at Turlock and Stockton (2002-2005), focusing on all of the mandatory Psychology courses required for a Bachelor's degree (Behavioral analysis focus). From 2002 to the present, I have tutored college students in their studies, veterans in their homes on PC skills (hardware and software) as a sub-contractor for the VA, and I have taught grades Pre-K thru 12. Additionally, I have a BS in Business Administration from Rollins College.

I passed all sections of the CA Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) in 2002 on the first sitting, and I have kept my certification current to date. Additionally, I passed the Miller Analogies Test on the first sitting without studying for it to get into grad school.

I have worked with probationers and parolees as a Program Manager, a Behavior Change Manager, and as an Employment/Education Coordinator using Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic (CBT) techniques which assist my clients in making self changes that allow them to move forward in life in a productive, pro-social manner. I have facilitated groups where I train, coach, teach, and educate my clients in many areas such as Moral Reconnection Therapy, Life Skills, Anger Management, Change Management, Cognitive Skills and many other basic skills areas.

Currently, I teach and tutor in the Modesto area. I look forward to assisting you in achieving your educational/academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The ACT Mathematics Test is a 60-question, 60-minute test designed to measure the mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken by the end of 11th grade.

The test presents multiple-choice questions that require you to use reasoning skills to solve practical problems in mathematics.

You need knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills to answer the problems, but you aren't required to know complex formulas and perform extensive computation.

ACT Reading

The Reading Test is a 40-question, 35-minute test that measures your reading comprehension. You're asked to read four passages and answer questions that show your understanding of:

•what is directly stated
•statements with implied meanings

Specifically, questions will ask you to use referring and reasoning skills to:

•determine main ideas
•locate and interpret significant details
•understand sequences of events
•make comparisons
•comprehend cause-effect relationships
•determine the meaning of context-dependent words, phrases, and statements
•draw generalizations
•analyze the author's or narrator's voice and method.

The test comprises four prose passages that are representative of the level and kind of reading required in first-year college courses; passages on topics in social studies, natural sciences, prose fiction, and the humanities are included.

Algebra 1

This is the part of math where we start using letters to represent numbers. For example, (1+2) * 3 = 9 could be written as (a+b) * c = n.

ASVAB

I have tutored many clients successfully in ASVAP preparation for the AFQT (Math, Reading, & Writing) portion.

CBEST

I have taught in Modesto City schools and Stanislaus County schools since 2003. I focus on grammar school classes, but I have also taught Child Development and high school courses. I have a California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) certification and I have held a Child Development certification. I have passed the GRE Writing Assessment and the MAT on first sitting with little preparation.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in Modesto City schools and Stanislaus County schools since 2003. I focus on grammar school classes, but I have also taught Child Development and high school courses. I have a California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) certification and I have a Child Development certification. I am a father of three children whose ages range from 4-7 years old.

In six months, I have taught a non-English speaking person to speak and write the English language.

General Computer

I have taught in Modesto City schools and Stanislaus County schools since 2003. I focus on grammar school classes, but I have also taught Child Development, adult education, and high school courses. I have a California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) certification and I taught PC Skills and general computer knowledge successfully to a variety of age groups as a one-on-one professional tutor. I have over 20 years of professional experience.

Poker

I believe in repetition and good examples as being necessary when teaching someone how to study effectively that will yield desired results. Gambling is in reality, probability, statistics, availability, and luck. This will be an easy course because it will be a game that is fun.

Public Speaking

I have given many speeches and briefings during my military career and academic pursuits. ToastMasters is a great organization to assist beginning speakers and to hone the skills of an advanced speaker. My experience has taught me a couple of things about public speaking over the years, which are still applicable today. The most important part of public speaking is knowledge of the subject you are going to speak about. Next comes organization of what you will say, whether in your head, or on paper.

Study Skills

I have tutored numerous individuals in Pre-K thru college level studies on PC Skills, Math, ASVAB, Paper-writing skills, English, Psychology, and several other subject areas. I believe in repetition and good examples as being necessary when teaching someone how to study effectively that will yield desired results.
