B.A., University of California, Berkeley (Political Science)
I am a recent magna cum laude graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in political science and received a 4.0 GPA. Throughout my education at UC Berkeley I wrote many essays of varying lengths on an array of topics and developed a strong passion for essay writing and academia. This prompted me to take positions where I could help other students develop stronger reading, writing, and studying skills.
I became a peer editor at UC Berkeley's Student Learning Center, where I peer reviewed students' essays in an effort to teach them how to write in a clear and organized manner. The essays I reviewed were mainly those for political science and history classes, as those were the classes that I mostly took, but I also reviewed essays from other subjects as well such as English and PACs. This position allowed me to teach others how to write in a clear war and greatly piqued my passion for teaching and for generating academic confidence within students.
I was also a tutor for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program through my work at East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, a non profit immigration law organization. As a tutor for the ESL Program I taught English to high school students who had immigrated to the United States from various countries. I taught these students how to better understand English by guiding them on how to better read, write, and pronounce English words and sentences. I directly helped theses students in their essay writing and speaking skills, as I taught them how to communicate their ideas in a clear and effective way. I also assisted students in better understanding homework assignments and in composing emails to professors. Furthermore, I served as an academic mentor to students by assisting them in registering for high school classes and in applying to colleges. This job allowed me to teach others how to speak more effectively and taught me how strong of an influence patience, clarity, and empathy have in tutoring.
Furthermore, I was a supervisor at UC Berkeley's Ethnic Studies Library where I assisted students in finding material needed for their research projects. This required extensive skills in navigating the online database for all the libraries within the University and also in requesting materials to be delivered from other libraries around the country. When needed, I taught students how to efficiently scan through large amounts of text in order to find the most relevant information for their research projects. I also organized the bookshelves throughout the library to ensure that all books were kept in the correct order. This job allowed me to teach others how to read more efficiently and taught me how important organization is in tutoring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
