University of Redlands (Music and English)
Cal State Univ., Fullerton-Choral Conducting-Voice (Master's)
As a 30-year conductor of choirs and orchestras in concert, I enjoy working with singers of all ages, from 7 to 77. I love to tailor lessons for where the student has progressed, with a personalized plan for developing their own voice or instrument. Having sung and accompanied myself from the piano since high school, I can relate to the student who learns by ear, but I believe it is essential to read the great composers from the written page.
I have loved teaching people to sing since I earned my Masters in Music with an emphasis in Voice at Cal State Fullerton. Graduating with honors in Music and English Literature, I find Music History fascinating and specialize in teaching students to read music. I also enjoy training beginning Pianists and Trumpeters.
My current availability is Monday-Saturday 9am to 9pm. Both in-person and on-line lessons are $80/hour. I can travel to students or they can come to my personal studio for a lesson. Please call me with any questions.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began my undergraduate years as a student at the University of Redlands assuming that my lifelong career would be teaching English at the High School level and above. My love for music led me to earn a Bachelor's degree with a double-major in Music and English, Magna cum laud. The training I received in literature, analysis, grammar, writing and proofreading has been a valuable supplement to my 30 years of working as a Director of Music and the Arts.
In 2013 I passed the C-Set Exam in Music offered by the Pearson Company. I graduated mana cum laude with a bachelors in Music and English from the University of Redlands which is noted for its School of Music. My Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting with an emphasis in Voice is from another well-known School of Music, at California State University, Fullerton. My 30 years of professional music has involved teaching music to adult, youth and children's choirs. I am comfortable singing and accompanying myself at the piano, playing music or chord symbols in many styles of composition.
I graduated magna cum laude with a double-major in Music and English from the University of Redlands. My entire Junior year of college included a Music History course as an exchange student at Durham University in England. Music History classes were also a basic part of the Master of Music degree that I completed at California State University, Fullerton. 30 years of experience in choral conducting has exposed me to the literature of the great composers, from Byrd to Bach and Beethoven to Bernstein. Three years ago I passed the C-Set test in Music through the Pearson Assessment company.
I came to music theory by the simple route of catching the principles through piano lessons. By the time I took theory courses at Redlands and Cal State Fullerton for my bachelors and masters I already enjoyed the music language and have continued to love it during 30 years as a full-time professional director of choirs and orchestras.
For over 30 years I have played piano as my primary instrument, accompanying my adult and children's choirs and myself in rehearsal and performance. I began taking lessons in 4th grade, continued taking piano with Luanne Long at the University of Redlands and recently studied with Gloria Roe, who was a pianist with the Billy Graham Crusades around the world. I take a classical approach to training piano, using Hanon scales and teaching students to play the masterworks of Great Composers, from Bach Preludes to Debussy's Clair de Lune.
I played trumpet in Concert Band in Junior High and in Symphonic and Marching Band in High School. During those years I was also taking private Trumpet lessons. Eight years of Piano lessons and university-level Voice lessons have prepared me to provide instumental lessons tailored to the needs of the beginning and intermediate Trumpet student. My love of this brass instrument has continued throughout the past three decades and I have conducted professional caliber Brass Ensembles at least three times every year, for Christmas, Easter and Fourth of July events.
