About Kathleen

My interest in helping others to learn developed at a young age, when I volunteered as a peer tutor in elementary school. From that time on, I have always enjoyed working with students and assisting them in the learning process. I have a Master's Degree in Communicative Disorders from Chapman University where I graduated summa cum laude. I hold a Rehabilitative Credential in Speech, Language and Hearing with a Special Classroom Authorization for Severe Language Handicaps. I have over fifteen years experience working with students with speech and language difficulties, learning difficulties, and children with special needs. I possess a variety of experiences working with students at the preschool, elementary and middle school settings in small group situations or on an individual basis. I have assisted classroom teachers and Resource Specialists within the school setting to team teach in the areas of reading, spelling, English and math. I also volunteered on a weekly basis at my children's elementary classrooms to assist the classroom teachers by working with small groups of students in various subjects.

In the past year, I have provided over 200 hours of tutoring assistance to elementary school students, with over 60 of those hours dedicated to Wyzant clients.

I thoroughly enjoy helping students develop their reading skills by addressing phonemic awareness and phonics skills, reading fluency, sight word knowledge, and comprehension skills. In addition, I have always possessed a love of math. I have experience working with children in this area, especially in the areas of elementary math, Prealgebra, and Algebra 1.

I am a friendly, patient and caring person. I am also a dedicated, organized, resourceful and committed individual who enjoys assisting students with their academic growth, learning and development . I enjoy utilizing an interactive learning approach while incorporating auditory, visual, tactile and kinesthetic learning styles to meet the needs of each individual student. I work diligently to create an atmosphere that is encouraging, stimulating, supportive and adaptive to the varied needs and interests of each individual student. Having the opportunity to assist others learn and succeed is a rewarding experience.

I am available to work within the student's home or library setting and can travel up to 10 miles. I am currently available afternoons and evenings. I am easily accessible by email or phone. Thank you for reading my profile and I hope to hear from you soon.

Gentle but firm approach — My son needs help in Language Arts, and Kathleen came to our rescue. We considered a Learning center with a 3 to 1 ratio, but I had a feeling he needed 1-on-1 guidance. Kathleen is great! There are times when my son would get restless, and she would gently yet firmly bring him back to task. Feedback! I so appreciate her feedback after each session. Keeping us well informed of where we're at a ...
